Muscles

What are the functions of the

muscular system?
1. Stabilize joints with their TENDONS
2. Produce movement (including
standing upright)
- Allows the body to move when
attached to bone
- Allows movement in internal
organs
3. Produce heat to maintain body
temperature

Involuntary Muscle
A muscle that is not under
conscious control.
Example: Cardiac and
Smooth muscle.

Voluntary Muscles
A muscle that is under conscious

control
Example: Skeletal muscles

3 Types of Muscle Tissue:

1.Skeletal
2.Cardiac
3.Smooth

Muscles at Work
Because muscle cells can
only contract, not extend,
skeletal muscles must
function in pairs.
While one muscle contracts,
the other muscle in the pair
returns to its original length.

Example: Bending the arm at

the elbow
First the bicep
contracts to bend the
elbow.
As the bicep contracts
the triceps relaxes.
Then to straighten
the elbow, the triceps
muscle contracts
At the same time the
bicep relaxes
