Grading Scale:
90%-100% = A 80%-89% = B 70-79% = C 60%-69% = D
25% - Grade based on daily participation, completed
assignments, ability to get along with staff and peers, and
possessing positive work habits
25% - Course notebook containing information gathered from the
internet, staff handouts and information gathered from other
sources.
25% - Quizzes and Tests (Each Module or Chapter has an
examination that requires the student score a 70% or higher.
25% - Activities and tasks given to the students on a regular
basis. These will consist of hands on activities such as truss
building, drywall application, framing. plumbing, etc.

Mr. Dalton is a licensed residential builder. He holds a Bachelors

Degree from Michigan State University and a Masters and an
Education Specialist Degree from Wayne State University. He has
a Vocational Certification from Ferris State University and holds an
NCCER (National Center of Construction Education and Research)
certification. He is qualified to teach both the Core Curriculum
and Carpentry. Mr. Dalton has built three complete homes with
high school students and three Habitat for Humanity homes while
in Florida as a Building Trades and Construction Technology
teacher.
Course Description:
In Building Trades I - Each student will be exposed to eight
different Core Curriculum Modules (Basic Safety, Construction
Math, Introduction to Hand Tools, Introduction to Power Tools,
Introduction to Construction Drawings, Basic Communication
Skills, Basic Employability Skills, and Material Handling). Basic
Rigging is an optional module they can complete for another
endorsement.
In Building Trade II - Each student will be exposed to Modern
Carpentry and Cabinetmaking and Cabinet Installation. Concrete
and Foundation work, Floor Framing, Wall and Ceiling Framing,
and Roof Framing will be emphasized. Stations will be set up so
the student can move from Station to Station exploring topics
such as roofing, drywall application, retailing wall and brick
paving methods, vinyl siding application, electrical and plumbing
application, block and brick laying, cultured stones laying,
ceramic tile laying, etc.
Building Trades III Each student can further their opportunities
for additional certifications in areas like Heavy Equipment
Operations and Welding. These two certifications will consist of
course work and the use of an Excavator Simulator and a Welding
Simulator to help train the students in welding and heavy
equipment operations.

Technology will be a big part in the Building Trades and

Construction Technology Curriculum. Besides the Welding
Simulator and the Excavator Simulator, the program has a CAD
program called SImbuild which teaches the students how to build
a shed, ranch home, and a multi-level home. Additional
technology will be added in the future.
Building Trades IV (Funding Permitted) Each student will be
able to participate in building a house or Habitat for Humanity
home in the local community.
Note: After completing the Core Curriculum, a National
Certification will be issed to the students. This will consist of an
NCCER card, transcript, and certificate. If students want to
continue on in the trades, they can add to this national
certificated if they so desire.
They are, also, offered an opportunity to receive an OSHA
certificated by participating in an on-line safety program offered
by the school district and the Building Trades and Construction
Technology Program.
Work Habits: In order to be employable, each student should
possess the following work habits.
Responsibility On time, trustworthy, concerned and follows
rules and regulations.
Dependability Prepared, completed work, and good
attendance.
Positive Attitude Follows rules, helps others, cleans work
areas, applies oneself, and doesnt complain.
Follows Directions Listens, pays attention to detail, and
works as directed.
Safety Follows safety rules, and wears safety equipment.
Initiative Volunteers without being told, uses time wisely,
exhibits leadership qualities, and requires little supervision.
Efficiency Conserves materials, measures accurately,
organized, and uses time wisely.

 Effort Works hard, completes tasks, and does extra work.

Attendance Works the required hours and reports on time
(no attendance or tardy problems).
Classroom Rules and Regulations:
Passes (bathroom and others) will be issued by Mr. Dalton 15
minutes after the bell rings and 15 minutes before the end of
the class period.
Respect others by keeping your hands off other peoples
property, keeping your body and objects to yourself,
remaining in your seats or designated areas until told
otherwise, and not talking while the teacher is talking.
Expectations:
All students must use safety equipment when needed.
All students must clean up after themselves (10 minutes
prior to class dismissal).
All students must have a pencil with them when class starts.
All students will be in the room before the scheduled class
begins (the door will be locked and you will be able to enter
with a tardy pass).
Consequences:
If you are responsible for your behavior, you are responsible
for the consequence.
The schools discipline code and policy will be followed.

doing work.
General Shop Rules
Do not work on any machines without the approval of the
instructor.
Wear eye protection when cutting, nailing and drilling, or if
there is the slightest chance of eye injury.
If you have long hair, keep it tied back.
Wear suitable clothing .
Report any equipment that does not seem to work properly.

 Never carry tools in your pocket.

Never place tools and equipment where they hang over the
edge of a bench or ladder.
Clean up all saw dust with the shop vac or broom and dust
pan.
Know where the fire extinguisher is located.
Use tools the proper way.
Remove all jewelry, watches, necklaces, etc.
A clean area is a safe area.
No fooling around Grabbing, chasing, hitting, throwing, and
horseplay is prohibited.
