November 2014

Welcome crafters...
What we love
this issue...

When early mornings arrive crisp with the first frosts of

the season, our thoughts turn to cosy winter pastimes to
craft from the comfort of our homes. And here at Crafty HQ,
the project cupboards are full to bursting with great ideas
to get the creative cogs whirring as the evenings draw in.
Keep your Christmas card list up-to-date with Keren
Baker's easy ideas using one paper kit (p11) or try Tracey Daykin-Jones' Noel
cards (p32); they're super easy and professional-looking too. There's also
sensational quilling from ace designer, Diane Boden (p38) and the hot
chocolate set by Helen Fitzjohn is a paper crafting triumph (p46).
We're delighted to be able to commemorate Remembrance Sunday in

The whole family can enjoy our

quick and easy card designs

November and delve into the history behind crafting on the home front (p56).
There are also some Scandi-style goodies for you to enjoy in our
trend-spotter feature (p86). Before I go, don't forget to check out the
2014 Craft Awards (p88) it's the first chance to vote for your favourite
product, shop or personality!
From me and the team, keep on crafting!

Craft tip

Tie a knot with wide lime

ribbon and narrower red
ribbon to add an
interesting textured
feel to the card

Simply cover a shop-bought blank with your

favourite patterned papers to make this
cheery card. Double-sided tape is your best
friend here; strips attached in lines on the
edge of the triangle will provide a secure
base for the ribbons. Start with a length of
red fixed horizontally along the bottom edge
of the triangle, securing the ends at the back.

Continue adding ribbons up the triangle to the

top of the tree. Finish with a bow and a star.

Mistletoe

Cover a green card blank with a layer of

gold foil using double-sided tape, then mount a
section of smaller white card over the panel.
Split a straw in half lengthways, cut and fix to
the front.
To make a mistletoe leaf, roll two strips
together using the quilling tool. Remove from
the pronged end. Unravel slightly before
pinching into a point at one end and doming
into a shallow bowl shape. Create six more in
the same way.
Stick the mistletoe pieces onto the blank
using PVA glue. Create four white berries by
rolling two half-length strips, 2mm wide,
then dome and secure to the leaves. Place
three coloured gems to the top and bottom
corners of the card, then write 'Mistletoe' at
the bottom.

Poinsettia box

Split red and green strips in half

lengthways and cut to half-size strips. Roll
each into a tight coil and allow them to uncurl
in the largest oval shape. Seal the ends and
leave to dry. Remove the shape and nip to a
point at one end. Repeat until you have ten red
quills and four green ones. Make three sprigs
by gently rolling six short green lengths and
sticking two side-by-side. Glue the green petals
and sprigs to the middle of a box lid as shown.
Fix five red quills into a flower shape using
double-sided tape. Create a second set, then
stick it to the first. Fringe yellow quilling paper,
5cm, by making tiny incisions along the length
of the strip and rolling tight. Place to the centre
of the flower. Add a couple of loosely curled
red tendrils to the lid, then place it onto the
box to finish.

Wreath
Split green quilling strips in half lengthways, then roll one
tightly using the tool. Allow it to uncurl slightly into a teardrop
shape on the board before gluing the end. Hold the leaf in
place by pressing bobby pins against it and into the foam
base of the board to dry.
Remove the shape and nip to a point at one side. Repeat
until you have a large amount of coils. Arrange them into a
two-layered circle using double-sided tape. Dot a few red
berries made from half-length rolled strips to the front. CB

WHAT YOU NEED

Stamps, Papermania: Magical

Christmas; Christmas Icons;
Reindeer; Merry Christmas,
102mm square; 203mm square
Papers: Lawn Fawn, Lets Polka;
Petite; Hello Sunshine; Basic
Grey, Fresh Cut; Highline
Notecards, mermaid, Lawn Fawn
Cardstock: white, light blue
Pen, gel, white
Embossing powder: seafoam
white, pink
Ink, pigment, white
Pearls, mini, self-adhesive
Punch, corner rounder
Foam pads, 3-D

Magical Christmas
Make a card blank, 12cm x 13cm,
from white. Add smaller matts of
different colours: dark green paper,
followed by light blue cardstock, then pink
paper. Cover the Magical Christmas
stamp with white ink and press, then add
white embossing powder. Heat to set.
Stamp and emboss a deer onto pink
spotted paper. Trim closely around it,
draw an outline in white, then add to the
card using 3-D foam pads. Draw faux
stitching around the edges of the blue
cardstock and nish with mini pearls
dotted around the words.

A sprinkling of snow
Whilst glitter can look pretty and add plenty of sparkle to your
cards, it's not always fun for the recipient who gets an
avalanche of the stuff as they open your greeting. Instead, the
use of white embossing powder is a great way to achieve a
frosty, lightly shimmering look and with zero mess! For a
metallic sheen, why not try silver or gold embossing?

Sock Tree
Create a top-fold card blank, 9cm x 12.5cm, using spotted notecards.
Add a smaller matt of green patterned paper. Trim a triangle of light blue
cardstock and draw a dashed white line around the edge.
Stamp nine stockings onto different patterned papers, apply white
embossing powder, then heat to set. Cut out a star and tree stump from
dark green paper and add above and below the blue triangle. Trim the
stockings and adhere using 3-D foam pads. Stamp a star, heat emboss
and cut out. Stick to the top of the tree with a 3-D foam pad and nish
with a pearl.

12 CRAFTS-BEAUTIFUL.COM

Sleigh Bells
Create a white card blank, 11.5cm x 15.5cm. Add a smaller matt of
pink spotted paper, followed by a blue paper panel embellished with a
pink paper strip, in the centre of the card.
Adhere a strip of green patterned paper and attach at an angle. Trim
the edges so theyre ush with the sides of the card, then draw small
dashes along the top and bottom in white.
Stamp and white emboss a sleigh and reindeers onto the panel,
then apply a smattering of pearls around the image. Adhere a thin strip
of blue cardstock to the left edge and add faux stitches to nish.

Love Birds
Adhere a slightly smaller matt of blue patterned
paper to a white card blank, 10.5cm square. Trim green
patterned paper, 7.5cm square, and stick to a larger matt
of white cardstock.
Stamp a wreath onto the centre of the green panel,
then emboss with white. Print the image again onto pink
paper, emboss with white and cut out the bow. Layer
onto the previously stamped image.
Press lovebirds onto pink paper and white emboss.
Trim and add to the card using 3-D foam pads. Add little
pearls around the wreath, then mount the whole panel
onto the card base using 3-D foam pads.

ROBIN BOX

Make an A5 silver blank. Matt white glitter

card, 12cm x 15cm, onto rich plum, then
add distress glitter to the white. Stick to
the base card using foam tape.
Matt an owl topper onto purple, then
secure to the glitter card. Add the 3-D
elements to the image using gel glue.
Stick a small 'Merry Christmas' sentiment to
purple and cut out.
Cut a 13cm purple border and x
patterned paper onto it, then stick to the
bottom of the card using foam tape. Add
the sentiment to the bottom corner to nish.

Cut white card, 29.6cm square. Mark at

the top and a side, 14.8cm in. Place a
mark at 15cm on a score board. Score
on the 11cm and 19cm lines, then score the
other side using the same measurements.
Make a 1cm tab on both sides of the
top-centre box and the bottom-centre
one. Snip around the tabs that are in all
four outer boxes, leaving them attached to the
centre panel, then cut up the other straight
line on the left and right sides to remove the
excess corner card. Create a notch at both
ends, then crease the folds and x to the
inner box sides.
Stick four Margaret Tarrant images
onto antique gold panels, 7.3cm x
10.4cm, then mount onto the box. Score
2cm in from the edge on all four sides of a
12.3cm square. Crease the folds and cut
notches into the corner tabs. Glue the corners
to create a lid. Stick a robin to the top using
foam pads.

PETE SAYS Die-cutting is the way to go if you are

making cards, and with Sizzix Bigz dies you can
cut multiple shapes with a single pass through
the machine. There are also six separate Sizzix
collections to choose from with a festive theme,
from the ultra contemporary designs by Debi

Potter and Paula Pascual to the more traditional

designs by Basic Grey. The eagerly anticipated
Tim Holtz Christmas collection is not to be
missed either if you have a shabby chic theme
in mind for this year.

CRAFT CLINIC

Learn & Make

I enjoy all sorts of crafts and

work with cardstock to cork,
foam and even fabric. Which
of the Sizzix dies are best for
dual usage?
PETE SAYS... For working with a wide selection of
materials, opt for Sizzix Bigz dies. They are the perfect
choice for any form of papercrafting, home dcor,
appliqu and quilting. The sturdy dies can cut through
the thinnest tissue paper to mount board, textiles,
leather, shrink plastic, acetates, foam, and balsa wood.
In fact just about anything you can cut with scissors!

What is the easiest way to remove handmade soap

from moulds?
RICHARD SAYS... Firstly, always leave the melt & pour soap to cool completely in a slightly

under filled mould; this will ensure theres a gap beneath the soap when you turn it over.
Press the top of the mould gently and the soap should release. Some soap base is softer
and tends to flex in the mould making it harder to remove, if this is the case place it in the
fridge or freezer for a short while. Finally, it can help to grease the mould with a light
coating of natural oil or petroleum jelly; dont overdo it though, as any residue can spoil
the finish of your soap.

I want to make some quick and easy Christmas

decorations that I can use at home or sell at
craft fairs, any suggestions?

Im always looking for ways to store

my charm packs so I can take them
to quilting classes, can you suggest
any handy storage solutions?
CORINNE SAYS... For quilters, crafters and anyone who
loves working with a variety of fabrics, storage is an
important consideration. For those occasions when
I need to transport my fabrics I use a Fat Quarter Bag
by Sew Easy. This highly functional carry-all has a seethrough lid and strong supporting handles. The mini
version is very handy and includes compartments for
needlework tools as well. Its ideal for anyone starting
on a new quilting or sewing project where the fabrics
can be kept safely in one place. Find local stockists at
groves@stockistenquiries.co.uk

SUZIE SAYS... Red and white felt stabilised with fabric stiffener makes a great starting point for
creating die-cut projects that are perfect for Christmas decorations. And if you are lucky
enough to own a Cricut Explore with its free online Design Space software, why not let
technology do the hard work for you? Simply hook up your home PC to the Explore to access
a wealth of Christmas motifs that are perfect for cards, gifts and accessories. Then, it is just
a case of fitting the Explore with a deep cut housing blade which will slice through felt easily.

How do you make the whipped

topping on cupcake soaps?
RICHARD SAYS... You can create a soft icing by whipping

a soap base often commonly known as ice cream soap

or foaming bath butter (its proper name being Crystal
OPC, made by Stephensons in the UK). It is a soft base
which when melted can be whipped up in a bowl with
an ordinary electric whisk and piped onto cupcake
soaps just like a butter icing. Its also possible to whip
white or coloured soap base. Melt it first until it is a
watery consistency, then whisk and as soon as it
becomes creamy, spoon it onto your cupcake. This
method is not easy to shape as the soap cools very
quickly, but it does set solid and resembles a genuine
sugar-icing.

Why not add woodland
creatures to the snowy
frontage as well?

SHADOW BOX
Give a shadow box a couple of coats of white
paint and leave to dry completely. Die-cut a
woodland shadow box in white and cut the top
layer in half, positioning it so it protrudes from
the edges of the box. Adhere behind the left and
right side, then add glitter glue to the edges.
Stick spotted paper into the base of the
drawer. Add a piece of curved teal cardstock
to act as a hill, then die-cut trees from green
cardstock to place on top.
Stamp a deer and stars onto the spotted base
and emboss with gold powder. Punch out six stars
from cardstock and glitter paper, then sandwich
white embroidery thread between them in pairs to
create three hanging stars. Attach the tops to the
ceiling of the box, dangling them at different heights.
Die-cut a second layer of the woodland scene,
cut in half and add to the inside of the drawer,
attaching it to the base using 3-D foam pads.
Adhere a plain white tree to the bottom-right of
the inside drawer.
Add adhesive pearls around the bottom-left and
top-right of the shadow box, then a strip of washi
tape at the bottom-right. Create a uid shape from
white cardstock, that is the same width as the box,
to act as a snowy oor to stand more trees on.

CHRISTMAS TREES
Coat a bottle brush tree thoroughly in teal mist.
Cut a second one in half and trim the branches.
Spray teal mist over the bottom half, but leave the
top half white. Allow all three to dry.
Adhere washi tape around the base of the small
teal tree. Add glitter glue to the edges and leave to
dry. Punch lots of tiny stars in different colours of
cardstock and adhere to the mini white tree and
large teal one. Allow to dry completely, then add two
glitter paper stars to the top of the largest one.
Position onto the white snow base to nish. CB

Easy Festive Die-cuts

GET CREATIVE WITH DIGITAL DIE-CUTTING AND MAKE CARDS FOR CHRISTMAS
Digital die-cutting has
revolutionised the world. Its a
fantastic way to create really
professional-looking projects
and also handy for when you
want to make batches of cards
using the same design. Most
digital die-cutting machines
come pre-loaded with a library
of images or free software,
which allows you to access
hundreds of images online. For
this project I have been
experimenting with the Cricut
Explore. The fonts on my
computer are automatically
uploaded with the Cricut Design
Space software. Ive created a
Christmas card using cute
images from the Jolly Holidays
Image Set. The colour theme has
been kept bright and fresh so
the images really pop out. Its a
great way to have a play and get
used to your new machine!

the basic technique

digital die-cutting
You can change the colours of the images on the
Design Space to the colours you want to use. This is
great for giving you an idea of what the finished image
will look like.
If you are making quite a few cards with the same
image, you can set the Explore at the cutting stage to
produce as many as you need; it will fit them onto the
standard 12 x 12 cutting mat.
Cut out several images in one go and store in little clear
bags until ready to use.
Scour the internet for free font sites, download them to
your computer and they will be uploaded to your Design
Space. Why not have a go at designing your own font?
Use good quality PVA glue with a very fine nozzle to
stick images down. This is good for really small fiddly
bits, plus it gives you a little time to move the image
correctly into position.

Save your projects on Design Space to

free up memory on your hard drive
A pair of old tweezers are really useful

Score a vertical line centrally down the
front of a kraft card blank, 14cm square, then
fold it back to create a stepfold. Round all
corners from a panel of bauble patterned paper
and stick to the inside fold using double-sided
tape. Trim green paper to t the inside of the
card, round the right corners and stick.
Adhere blue patterned paper to chipboard
and die-cut the word 'NOEL'. Tie bakers twine
around the letter 'L'. Cut out several rectangles
from co-ordinating patterned papers and cut
inverted 'v' shapes into one end of each. Glue
red sweets paper to the front panel and stick
the remaining pieces to the inside.
Secure the die-cut word over the front
section using 3-D foam pads. Die-cut a
snowake from cream and glue to the top of
the 'N'. To complete, adhere three silver gems
to the 'O'.

Christy is my Creative Assistant and

2003, Stacey forever changed
the world of papercrafting
when she co-developed the
first universal cutting and

that cut, emboss and stencil.
Her achievement has resulted
in the most widely used
format for manual die-cutting

Stacey to discover what the
driving force is behind the
founder of one of the world's
most innovative craft brands.

How does your work change

from day to day?

Whats your first work-related

task of the day?
I'm an early riser and usually get up
around 5am, have coffee and watch
the sunrise with my husband Jeff.
I do have an office that I go to daily,
but thankfully I am blessed with a
home studio too, where I can create
and design at any hour of the day. It
ts well within my domestic life
because I can work from either
place. My home duties are eased
quite a bit by my wonderful
husband who happens to be a
fabulous cook! Also, if I'm working
late at night my two teenaged boys
and their friends often visit me
while I'm in the studio.

Have you always been interested

in paper crafts?
I've always been a paper crafter
I was the little girl in school who
loved to clean erasers and chalk
boards in return for pretty coloured
construction paper - thats what we
called cardstock when I was a child!
I then went on to become quite
creative in my spare time. The
catalyst for my career change from
dentistry to what I do now happened
as a result of a serious neck injury in
a car accident. After I had recovered,

34 CRAFTS-BEAUTIFUL.COM

I was the little girl in school who loved

to clean erasers and chalk boards in return
for pretty coloured paper
I was forced to evaluate my situation
and make changes. Looking back, it
was a hard decision to leave my
career but it was absolutely the
correct choice. Starting with an idea
oating in my head for the rst
universal cutting system, l've
certainly changed my life and the
way we all die-cut. I have evolved so
much over the years by being
surrounded by the creative people
that are in the office with me daily.
Each one of them is an inspiration
and my hero. I am now able to share
ideas and actually bring them to life
in the products that I am creating.

What do you enjoy most about

being your own boss, and the
least?
I love the creative freedom it allows
me. I can work a full day in the
office or at home and I really dont
have to clear that with anyone.
I think if I had to pick what I like the

least about being a boss, it would be

the constant worry that I'm sure all
business owners struggle with. For
example, staying ahead of the
curve, being competitive and
continuing to lead the market in all
that we do. Every decision counts,
so I'm always thinking about that.

Do you employ anyone else and

how does that fit in with your day?
I am blessed to have 40 employees
that work with me. I could not even
imagine doing what I do without
every one of them. It is amazing the
things that happen when people
who believe in your vision rally
around and work as a team to make
those dreams a reality. Its magical.

Do your family get involved and

who are they?
Oh, is my family ever involved! My
husband Jeff and I started this
adventure together ten years ago.

The basic principles of my work

stay the same for the most part,
concerning design and product
development. However, what
constantly changes is the various
events, training, workshops, sales
calls, media opportunities and
travel! Thats where my life in this
business is really crazy - I'm always
on a new adventure somewhere.

What do you feel has been your

greatest achievement whilst
running your business?
Creating a worldwide business
from an idea in my head ten years
ago. It almost dees logic at what
we were able to accomplish. The
greatest reward in all of this is that
my marriage, sons and family life
are rock solid. Successfully juggling
both that and a career has been my
greatest achievement.

Business Bite...
My best piece of advice to
pass on to anyone wanting
to make it in the craft world
is to be authentic and stay
true to yourself. No matter
how difficult the road
becomes remember that
you give a piece of yourself
away with everything you
create. Make it special and
stay passionate!

DIANE BODEN quills

Dainty Festive Florals

DECORATE GIFTS FOR CHRISTMAS WITH OUR TINY QUILLED WINTER BLOOMS
Deck the halls with boughs of holly...
traditional Christmas greenery has
been the inspiration for this collection
of seasonal designs. There is plenty of
quilled mistletoe, which hopefully will
produce the same results as the real
thing! A series of teardrop shapes
work wonders when shaping petals
and leaves. For the berries I have used
a solid coil technique it requires a
little patience to achieve and the end
result means that it doesnt leave a
hole in the centre of your quilling.
Use the pronged tool it will make it
easier to shape the coils, then
assemble them into flowers or leaves
to use for decorating a range of gift
items, including a card. This quilling
technique, when made in miniature,
offers a lovely delicate finish, perfect
for all your Christmas papercrafts.
Happy quilling, Diane x

WHAT YOU NEED

Quilling strips: 3mm
in dark green, olive,
white, crimson, fawn,
scarlet; 2mm in bright
yellow

Quilling tool
Glue, PVA
Card blank
Gift box, round

Large Poinsettia
Make seven 11cm leaf shapes in crimson
for the poinsettia petals, then glue them
together in a circle so that the points touch.
Create seven 15cm leaf shapes and glue these
in between the smaller petals on the back.
Make some tiny coils from 2mm yellow strips
(just a couple of turns on the tool no need to
glue), then adhere some to the centre.
To shape the small poinsettias, make as
above, but use 11cm strips for the larger petals,
and 7.5cm strips for the smaller ones.

Poinsettia Basket
To assemble the basket, create rows of
quilled shapes as follows: first row, create nine
teardrops from 22.5cm fawn strips. Roll up a
strip to make a coil, then allow to expand and
glue down the end. Pinch at the join to form a
teardrop shape.

38 CRAFTS-BEAUTIFUL.COM

You'll need eight 5.5cm closed coils for the

second row, roll up a strip on the quilling, allow
to expand, then glue down the end. For the
third row, create eight leaf shapes from 11cm
strips. Pinch the coil with your fingers at both
ends in opposite directions.
For the fourth row, make six 7.5cm closed
coils and for the fifth, seven 22.5cm teardrops.

Follow with a sixth row made with 7.5cm

leaf shapes. Create the basket handle with
24 15cm leaf shapes. To assemble, arrange
all the basket pieces on the background
card before sticking down, paying particular
attention to the handle. Arrange poinsettias,
holly and mistletoe on top of the basket
before sticking down.

MASTERCLASS

Learn & Make

Holly & Ivy Garland

Start by making the stem for the holly leaf.
Fold some 11cm strips in half, then roll from each
end to form a curl. Make the leaves using some
11cm strips shaped into coils. Pinch hard into a
diamond shape.
For the berries use 5.5cm red strips. Make solid
coils by working away at the end of a strip with
your finger nail, then roll very tightly using your
fingers to make a solid shape. Push up into a dome
using a glass headed pin. Coat the underside with
glue and allow to dry.
To make the ivy leaves, shape a diamond from
an 11cm strip, two from 7.5cm strips and two from
5.5cm strips. Glue together with the 5.5cm coils at
the bottom. Add a paper strip all round the shape to
pull the ivy together. Arrange the quilling on the lid
of a gift box and glue down.
Make the knot from a 15cm coil and pinch into
shape. Roll two 45cm strips into coils and shape
into a bow. Create two coils from 22.5cm strips, pull
them into long thin shapes and pinch into points.

USE A GLASS-HEADED PIN TO

HELP PUSH A SOLID COIL INTO
A DOME WHEN MAKING HOLLY
AND MISTLETOE BERRIES
Diane Boden, Designer

Mistletoe Tag
Cut an oval shape from cream
card. Fix a strip of patterned
paper down the centre and stick
red quilling paper on either side
to create a border. To assemble
the mistletoe, make eight petal
shapes using 5.5cm white strips;
form the teardrop first, then pull
the point over to one side. The
berries are made from four solid
coils using white quilling strips.

Craft tip
Dont roll the large holly
coils too tightly always
allow enough room for
them to breathe
when shaping

Make six petal shapes from

30cm olive strips. Pinch into a
thin shape and spread a little glue
on the back, then hold it together
until dry. Shape four 15cm petals
in the same way. Make eight solid
coils as before, using 11cm strips.
Arrange mistletoe on tag and cut
lengths of stem to fit. Glue down
all sections, then make a bow
from two 15cm red teardrops.
Add red strips for ribbon. CB

TREE CARD
Make a variety of polymer clay buttons as
before. Cut blue cardstock, 17.5cm x 25cm, and
fold in half. Trim orange paper, 12.5cm x 15cm,
and create waves on both long edges, then stick
to the front of the cardstock. Add a wavy layer
of striped paper on top, 12.5cm x 14.5cm.
Cut out two strips from yellow spot paper,
7mm wide, and stick to the top and bottom of
the card. Arrange the buttons in a Christmas
tree formation and glue into place with PVA.

BUTTON BOX
Mix up a small amount of moulding
compound to the manufacturer's instructions
and press in a vintage button. Leave for ten
minutes, then pop the button out. Condition
green polymer clay and press a small ball into
the mould, then take it out. Make an orange and
blue button in the same way, then make two
small orange buttons from a silicone mould
and bake.
Transfer the box template from our pattern
pages onto blue card. Cut the shape out and
fold into place as indicated. Draw a rectangle
onto orange paper, 8.5cm x 20cm, and cut the
long edges with wavy edged scissors. Spray the
paper with adhesive and stick to the centre of
the box shape.
Draw a rectangle onto striped paper, 6.5cm
x 20cm, and add waves to the long edges. Stick
to the orange paper with spray mount. Cut two
strips of yellow spot paper, 1cm x 20cm, and
adhere on top. Stick the flap to the side of the
box with PVA glue. Once dry, fold into shape
and glue the buttons to the front and end flaps.

Easy Washi Tape Cards

GET STICKY WITH DECORATIVE TAPE AND DESIGN BRIGHT AND UNIQUE SEASONAL GREETINGS
Wild about washi tape? Me too!
This versatile sticking product is
a slightly translucent masking tape
that comes in a wide variety of
patterns, colours, widths and styles.
What makes it magic? Besides being
so effortless to use, it offers tons of
possibilities for creating customised
card backgrounds for a wide range
of different occasions.
This month, were combining
washi tapes with different prints,
then cutting them into strips and
re-assembling them to make
personalised backgrounds. Ive cut
my strips in widths from 15mm to
2cm, then rearranged them to create
a mosaic effect. This beautiful but
simple technique is so easy to
donot only is it perfect for cards
and papercrafts throughout the year,
but its also spot on for making fun,
modern Christmas greetings.

Its fun to include

one solid design with
the patterns. This
helps create a visual
space between the
designs to give the
viewers eye a place
to rest between the
colours and patterns

Craft tip
A paper trimmer is essential
for creating evenly-cut strips
of washi tape paper.
Remember, the strips dont
have to be exactly the
same width some
variation is fun!

Merry Christmas
A trio of three stamped sentiments
makes a cheerful Christmas message.
The circular images balanced with the
stripes of washi tape helps keep the
design from looking too linear
Create a washi tape background with red
polka dot and pink solid tapes. Trim to 11cm x
18.5cm. Lightly glue a 3cm wide strip of vellum
across horizontally. Mount on black card.
Wrap bakers twine across horizontally,
securing the ends to the back. Stamp three
Merry Christmas circles on white card and
emboss with black, then cut out and fix evenly
across the vellum with foam tape.
Add bakers twine bows on either side of the
piece as shown. Matt the piece onto fuchsia
card. Trim red card, 12.5cm x 20cm. Ink the
edges, then sprinkle with gold embossing
powder and heat set. Glue to the front of a white
card, 13cm x 20.5cm, then add the washi tape
piece in the centre.

Sara says...
I embossed the Merry Christmas
circles instead of simply stamping
them; I love the combination of the
raised, shiny embellishments with the
slick surface of the tapes. It makes the
card so much more tactile!

Noel
A mix of washi tape widths gives this
chequer board pattern extra style
and variety simply trim strips to
size for easy application
Create a washi tape background with
pink/gold patchwork, red solid and
burgundy solid tapes. Trim to 10cm x
19cm. Mount on black, then red card. Ink
the edges with embossing ink, then
sprinkle with gold embossing powder
and heat-set. Glue to the front of a white
card, 11.5cm x 21cm.
Stamp Noel on white card and
emboss with black. Emboss the edges
with gold. Place a strip of red washi tape
across the bottom, then place a piece of
burgundy on top.
Wrap the piece with bakers twine and
fix it to black card with foam tape. Mount
onto red, then black card and glue to the
front. CB

CHOCOLATE CARD
Horizontally cut across an A3 sheet of white
card, 13cm high, to create a strip. Use a pencil to
mark the following measurements on the strip:
6cm, 8.5cm, 14.5cm, 17cm, 23cm, 25.5cm, 31.5cm.
Score and fold at each division, with the 2.5cm
sections in a valley fold.
Create seven white cards using the template on
the pattern pages. Score, cut and colour with the
pens. The base colour is vanilla. The spotty strips
are made using lipstick red and a white gel pen,
then caramel and cool grey to create the striped
ones. Fold up the bottoms of each panel to create
pouches, then punch two matching holes through
the front and back.
Trace the characters onto each panel using a
lightbox and black fineliner. Colour, then add a day

of the week to each using the templates. Cut ribbon,

18cm, and thread through the holes from back to
front. Place mini chocolate bars in the pouches and
tie the ribbons to the front. Adhere six brown card
strips, 2.5cm x 6cm, down the card spines and add
a larger panel to the section without a day, before
securing the panels using double-sided tape.

CUPS & SPOONS

Trace a girl, two squirrel motifs and a small
sentiment, then colour. Cut one large and two
smaller circles from brown paper, then stick the
girl image to the bigger one and the two squirrel
images atop the others. Punch holes to the
sides and thread paper string through. Mount
onto paper cups using 3-D foam pads, then tie
at the back.

Place hot chocolate powder, marshmallows

and chocolate buttons into cellophane bags, tie
tightly with paper string, then put in the cups.
Paint four wooden spoons, two spotty and two
stripy, using red and white acrylic paint.
Once dry, cut out a hot chocolate phrase
from the pattern pages, fold in half loosley, snip
a triangle from the end and insert over a spoon.
Trim a circle, 2cm, from white and colour grey.
Stamp on a snowflake using white paint and
add white dots using a gel pen and leave to dry.
Mount over the flag using a foam pad. Varnish
the spoons if they are to be used. CB

ON MANY DIFFERENT PROJECTS
Nancy Straughan, Designer

WHAT YOU NEED

Soft cut lino
Ink-pads: pink, orange
Bags: tote, zip
Card, white
Lino cutter handle and
blades
Brayer
Pencil

MAKE A LINO STAMP

Draw a Scottie dog template with a soft pencil.
Turn the template over and place onto lino, then
transfer the motif by rubbing the back thoroughly
with a pencil.
Rest the blade of a lino cutter onto the surface
and press gently to get used to the cutting motion.
Trace around the template using the smallest blade
size, then change to a larger one to cut away the
rest. Always trim away from your ngers, don't
press too deeply and take your time.

Once you have removed all the lino around your

design, trim off the excess to make it easier to see
where you are placing your stamp when printing.

PRINT ONTO FABRIC

Apply a layer of ink to the Scottie dog stamp. Flip it
over and lightly press onto your chosen fabric or
card, then use a brayer to apply even pressure over

the back of the entire stamp. Once complete, leave

to dry or, if using fabric, heat set the design using a
hot, dry iron. CB

Crafting

on the
HOME FRONT

Words by Rosie Savage

TO COMMEMORATE THE
CENTENARY AND IN HONOUR
OF REMEMBRANCE DAY, WE
TAKE A LOOK AT THE
INTEGRAL ROLE THAT
CRAFTING PLAYED IN THE
FIRST WORLD WAR
This year has been pivotal in remembering the fallen of
the First World War and beyond. The 4th of August
marked the centenary and, amongst other events, lights
were extinguished all over the country in memory.
Theatre groups have performed the moving stories of
Birdsong and Not About Heroes, guided tours have
shed light on unknown monuments, and seminars and
workshops have ensured we keep remembering and
learn something new. In fact, the Imperial War Museum
are posing the question 'how do we understand 19141918?' because there's no one left to ask. We thought
we'd commemorate the occasion in a way that only
Crafts Beautiful can. Here we illuminate crafting from
the era and explore how you can show your respect
through creativity today.

For our boys

We caught up with Imperial War

Museum historian Laura Clouting to
find out the importance of crafting
during wartime. Here's what she had
to say about the three big techniques:
sewing, knitting and baking.

SEWING
During both world wars, sewing was a crucial skill for men as much as women. Soldiers
and sailors were issued with a 'housewife' sewing kit, and repairing worn-out uniform
was critical because of intense pressure on the materials. Clothing had to be well beyond
repair before it would be replaced. At home during both wars, sewing was undertaken on
an industrial scale as uniform items were made for Britain's rapidly expanding armies.
Within the home, women, determined to make extra items for their ghting men,
feverishly undertook sewing. This was such a popular endeavour that songs were written
in honour of the frenzy of activity, like the First World War tune 'Sister Susie's Sewing
Shirts'. The ditty describes the ceaseless efforts of a young girl using all the material she
can nd to make shirts for soldiers, including fabric from her brother's kite.

Learn & Make

KNITTING
In the First World War, a knitting mania swept
across Britain. Many made warm, cosy
garments for loved ones who were away on
active service and ghting in very difficult
conditions. Frostbite was a serious problem on
the Western Front and others like Gallipoli, so
knitted scarves and gloves would have been a
welcome gift for most men. Socks were
especially in demand as most infantry soldiers
moved everywhere on foot. Once again in the
Second World War, knitting comforts for troops
enabled many to contribute to the war effort.
Organisations like the Womens Institute
co-ordinated knitting activity, but most was
undertaken by family members for their
loved ones.

Trench cake recipe

Images from Knitting for Tommy by Lucinda

Gosling in association with Mary Evans Picture
Library (The History Press, 9.99).

What You Need

Margarine, 4oz Vinegar, 1 tsp Milk, pint
Brown sugar, 3oz Cleaned currants, 3oz
Cocoa, 2 tsp Baking soda, tsp Nutmeg
Ginger Lemon rind, grated

Soldier lad, on the sodden ground, Sailor lad on the seas,

Can't you hear a little clicketty sound stealing across on the breeze?
It's the knitting-needles singing their song as they twine the khaki or blue,
Thousands and thousands and thousands strong, Tommy and Jack, for you.

Method
Grease a cake tin. Rub margarine into the our
in a bowl, then add the dry ingredients and mix
well. Add the baking soda dissolved in vinegar
and milk, then beat and turn into the tin. Bake in
a moderate oven for two hours.

Taken from The Knitting Song by Jessie Pope, 1915

BAKING
When cakes were made for soldiers, the end result had to be hardy enough to make the arduous
journey to the ghting fronts. They had to be packaged up then transported across land and sea.
On the trench-deadlocked Western Front, parcels had to pass hands numerous times to make it
up through the lines of trenches to the lucky recipients. Men who shared their cakes with other
men became a hero for the day. Simple fruit cakes that would last weeks before going off were
most popular. As rationing kicked in at home, creative minds set to work to persuade civilians to
try new substitute foods. Home-grown potatoes were encouraged as a substitute for imported
wheat-based bread, and endless recipes were published to persuade people to try the likes of
potato rock cakes and chocolate potato biscuits.

In remembrance
Designed by Julia McKenzie, the
Remembrance product range at the
Imperial War Museum took inspiration
from the words of Siegfried Sassoon
in his poem Aftermath, along with
stories of those caught up in the
events of the First World War. The
wild roses woven into the illustration
are taken from a small bag
embroidered by Lance Corporal
Charles Frampton, of the 12th
Battalion Middlesex Regiment, whilst
in hospital. Charles died from injuries
on the 19th August 1917.

Have you forgotten yet?

Look up, and swear by the green of
the spring that youll never forget...

The Poppy Factory

Turn to p80
The origins of the Poppy Factory go back to
1922 when Major George Howson MC, an
to win a copy
engineer who served on the Western Front
of The Poppy
in the First World War, founded the Disabled
Factory by
Society to help disabled ex-service men and
Liz Trenow
women. He suggested to the British Legion
that the society should make poppies, and the
articial owers were designed so that someone who
had lost the use of a hand could assemble them. With a grant of 2000,
he set up a small factory off the Old Kent Road with ve ex-servicemen.
It was here that the rst British poppies were made.

Never forget
During the conflict, women would often stitch
heart sachets with embroidered forget-menot motifs for their loved ones on the Front.
Bring this idea to the 21st century with a
resin pendant encasing beautiful dried
forget-me-not flowers, designed and made
by Becky Bentley.
Measure out the correct ratio of resin and
catalyst, then combine the two and stir
thoroughly. Pour a first layer of resin into a
mould and leave to cure. Dip forget-me-nots
in resin to avoid air bubbles later.

WHAT
YOU NEED
Resin and catalyst
Polishing compound
Mould, teardrop
Forget-me-nots
Glitter
Chain
Bail
Dremel
Sandpaper
Plastic cup
Wooden stirrer
Gloves

Pour more resin in and arrange the

flowers the piece is reversed so you want
the flowers face-down and mirrored. Once
cured, pour in a final layer of resin, this time
adding a touch of glitter. Leave to cure for up
to 48 hours or until fully set.
Pop the piece out of the mould and sand
any rough edges. Polish to a high shine using
a Dremel or bench polisher with polishing
compound. Drill a hole at the top and add a
bail, then insert a chain. CB

The WIs involvement

The WI was set up
in 1915 and it was
seen as a means of
providing work for
the women of rural
communities to earn
some money and
help their economies
during the war, and
the majority of
crafts traded were
textile-based. From the very early days of the
WI, many members had an interest in crafts,
both as a leisure activity and as a means of
augmenting their incomes. In the first NFWI
annual report in 1917, there is a record of all
the cooking and craft contributions of WIs to
their communities including jam-making and
bottling, basket and toy-making, the collection
of thistle-down for quilts and cushions, linen
leagues, and needle-work guilds to make
items for the poor.
Janice Langley, Chair of the National
Federation of Women's Institutes

Download these gorgeous forgetme-nots at crafts-beautiful.com.

Drawn by illustrator and
PaperCrafter editor Ella Johnston,
they would be a wonderful
addition to your crafting.

Before we go
During the First World War, a real
tree in no man's land with its
branches blasted off was
sketched by a soldier-artist from
the Royal Engineers' camouage
unit. A replica tree with a steel
core was made behind the lines,
then the real tree was removed
at night and replaced with the
fake one. From there, the
observer could crawl up inside it
and watch the German lines.
Crafting supported the war in
ways we can never begin to
imagine. To share any family
stories or remembrance makes
of your own, get involved with our
'In Remembrance' topic on the
forum at homecraftforums.com.

I MADE IT ON
Three crafters tell us why they love Etsy; the
handmade marketplace presenting small creative
businesses with an opportunity to be noticed

he creative marketplace that is Etsy was born in

2005 and over the past few years it's really started
to build momentum. More stringent selling
regulations were introduced in 2013, providing useful

guidelines for sellers, which in turn assures quality products

for customers. Etsy is fast becoming a household name, and
its sellers are delighted to be a part of its growth.
WORDS BY EMMA ZUCKER

THE
DOODLER
Talented sketcher Becky
Kemp discovered Etsy in
a craft magazine and
saw it as a possible
escape route from her
stressful job working long hours. Instead,
she could do something she was
passionate about. That was in 2011, and
Becky hasnt looked back.
I dont think my business would be where
it is today without Etsy, explains Becky. It
has all the support you could ever need from best practice articles to a very inclusive
community which feels like a family.
Sketch.inc began as a small art and
jewellery business which grew from
sketchbook doodles, and now Becky has a
studio space at the back of her house. Her
offering includes a varied selection of
brooches, prints, wooden
dolls, plates and stationery
inspired by her love of
Nordic design and
Japanese illustration.
She was surprised to
have accessed a different
audience on Etsy to her
own website. My sales on
Etsy are very much
brooch-driven, whereas
my website sales are
predominantly prints and
Kokeshi dolls, she says. I
think the majority of my
Etsy customers are
looking for small,
distinctive gifts. The

62 CRAFTS-BEAUTIFUL.COM

greatest advantage to working for yourself is

that you can create anything.
Etsy charges Becky about 12p per listing,
followed by a small percentage from each
sale, making it extremely accessible for a

THE
VINTAGE
SEAMSTRESS
Eleanor Callaghan started using
Etsy at the end of 2009 after a
friends recommendation, a
couple of years after successfully starting her
vintage-inspired dress business, Dig for Victory.
She is delighted with how Etsy has helped her
along the way.
Part of the reason why we have been so successful
on Etsy is because it is such a user-friendly website,
says Eleanor. It's always been simple and
straightforward, and the strong communication
tools meant I was able to develop
a good relationship with my customers.
About seven years ago Eleanor started making
stage outts for her and her partner's band,
The Bobby McGees. After beginning to receive
requests from friends and family, the business
began to grow rapidly and she now has a team
of workers - including her partner.
I think the main point of why the business has
developed successfully is because each dress is
custom made to order, explains Eleanor. This means
it can be created in a standard size or made to
measure, and the detailing can be tailored to suit the
customers desires.
Eleanor offers some simple advice for any
prospective Etsy sellers: To continue making the
products you love and to keep an eye on trending
keywords!
Her and her team have always learnt a lot from Etsy
guidelines when it comes to taking photos. Photos are
really important when trying to sell items - it's the rst
thing a customer sees and often the main thing that
they take note of when considering purchase.

THE
JEWELLERY
MAKER
Ladybird Likes is the
brainchild of Zoe Bateman
and focuses on her love for
handmade items made
from laser-cut wood and vintage-inspired
imagery. She began selling on Etsy nearly
three years ago.
Lots of my
favourite
bloggers were
talking about
things they'd
bought from
this online
marketplace
called Etsy,
explains Zoe. I bought some craft supplies from
US sellers - things I couldn't get in the UK - and
pretty soon I was hooked!
Zoe can't imagine doing anything else and
tells us Etsy is a pleasure from a sellers point of
view. It has lots of handy features like being able
to duplicate listings when you have lots of similar
items, she says. Selling on Etsy is awesome
because you can reach such a huge global

audience, and it's also a really affordable way

to sell your products.
Zoe tells us that Etsy attracts a certain sort
of customer - those who are passionate about
nding handmade items different from what's
on offer on the high street. They are my
perfect type of customer so Etsy provides an
ideal way to get your work in front of the right
audience, she explains.
Shes certainly ying the ag for being an
Etsy seller, and Zoe also has some useful
advice for anyone thinking about taking the
plunge: Go for it! But also, don't expect to list
items and immediately have 100 sales. It
takes time and effort to build a successful
shop on Etsy. Stick with it though and
it will pay off.

How to get selling

Have you shopped with Etsy? Or are you tempted

to start selling yourself? There are lots of useful
guides and articles on the website to help you
make the most of it. And the sense of community
on this fast-expanding creative marketplace is
reason enough to get involved. CB

How to assemble... A ROBIN CARD

From the pattern pages, cut out a robin's

body and wing from kraft card and an eye

breast and green holly leaves. Stick the red
front to the body and matt onto brown. Line
up the beak to the top of the red and x. Trim

Arrange the holly into a cluster and matt
onto brown, then add the wing. Punch three
red circles and glue onto the leaves. Cut out
the holly and wing with a border. Add detail
to the holly and beak using black and white
pens. Attach both elements to the bird.

Make a stand by creating a brown

top-fold blank, 7.5cm x 8.5cm. Stick centrally
to the back of the robin so that the bottom of
the blank is in line with the bird. Snip away
the excess. Trim a straight section at the
bottom so it can stand. CB

Theres something really appealing about

neat rows of knots in beautiful colours

Craft legend Corinne Bradd talks

all things yarn this month

or a woman who says shes not really

a knitter, I have an awful lot of yarn.
Three sea-grass chests in fact, plus a
load of random colours scattered around
that are works in progress. I say I dont do
a lot with yarn but my tensions good and I
can follow a pattern. My downfall is that I
keep putting off getting my carpal tunnel
sorted, so an evenings work with hook or
needles leaves me with a whole night of
painful pins and needles. I still carry on
regardless, copper bangle and ibuprofen
gel at the ready, because theres something
really appealing about neat rows of knots
in beautiful colours.
My wool collection is a bit like my fabric stash
and paper piles. Theres never two of the same
weight in the same colour. Everything I make
tends to be striped or in blocks. If I ever made a
garment, it would have to be a patchwork granny
square waistcoat like the one I had as a child.
It was red, white and blue, and made up of 32
blocks. I loved it so much that once Id grown out
of it, my mum made it into a cushion for the back
seat of the car.
Both my mum and nan would root through
local jumble sales for hand-knitted garments.
They would be unravelled and wound around my
outstretched hands the hours I spent perched on
a tiny footstool with my arms up in the air!
before being twisted into skeins and thoroughly
washed in an old twin tub that used to skate
across the oor when it span too vigorously. Once
dry, they would be wound into balls, before being
magically transformed into blankets. I dont know
how many were made for charity, but there was
always one ready to be shipped off.
I still have the enormous blankets that my
mum made for Guide camp. Theyre made up of
all the colours deemed too miserable for charity
but perfect for getting muddy!. I still dont know
how she managed to make them so big; I struggle
with the weight of anything larger than a two foot
crochet square and nd myself throwing the work
over my shoulder. I fancy doing something a little
more complicated next an Intarsia blue tit on a
cushion cover, or a trendy bit of fairisle on a scarf.
If only I had the yarn in the correct colours!

Meet Bernard
If you have a basic understanding of working in the round, you can whip up a whole
menagerie of colourful cuddlies without following a pattern. Bernard the giraffe was made
while camping (Again? I hear you say. Does this woman even have a bricks and mortar
home?) between cooking fry-ups and running after small children. Worked in double
crochet with a 3.5mm hook, his head and body are pear shapes, starting from the top for
the head and from the bottom for the body and neck. The arms, legs and ossicones are
tubes of different lengths, and the ears are circles with a couple of trebles to shape them.
The trick to making him cute lies in the stuffing and positioning of parts!

YARN MEMORIES
This pincushion was made for Homemaker magazine by printing
an old photo onto fabric. Its one of my favourite pictures of my
mum, sister and me. Youll see Im sporting the incredible granny
square waistcoat I mentioned earlier! And theres a big smile on
my face, so I must have adored it.

Theres been a crochet revival

recently and it couldnt come
soon enough. A whole new
generation of hookers are
being taught by their
grandmothers in return for
advice on using a smart
phone. Many toys can be
worked in the round and, as

can do it. I especially like

Q&A

Fox scarf, 22,

Why do some balls of yarn last

longer than others? They all tend to
be 50g but some of them make more
rows than others.
ANTHEA KNOX, OXFORD
Good question, and one Ive asked myself in the past until I realised the
answer is really quite simple. Some yarn is heavier than others. Just
because its called DK doesnt mean the yarn is the same weight, its
just wound into a ball that measures 50g. What you need to check is
the yardage. Youd be surprised at the difference in length between
balls depending on the material used. Ive looked up the yardage of
several 50g balls of yarn for example, 100% cotton is 84m and 100%
acrylic is 140m, so thats quite a difference isnt it?

STAR CARD
Create a square card blank from gold
cardstock, then add a facing of purple to the front.
Trace a five-point star to the centre and outline in
metallic gold. Fill in each section with various
colours and patterns we've opted for stripes,
swirls, spots, leaf designs, and circles.
Draw two swirling tails from the star in metallic
gold, then add dots in light pink, light blue and
metallic gold. Colour two mini wooden stars one
in gold, another in red with light pink dots and
attach to the card with foam pads. Apply dashes of
metallic gold to 'suspend' the stars from, then add
adhesive gems to the card to complete.

PILLOW BOXES
Trace the box template onto cardstock, then cut,
score and fold where indicated. Position a star motif
of your choice to the centre of side A and transfer
onto the card.
Decorate the motifs with pens in various
colours, allowing drying time between each
application. Once complete, fold over the centre line
and punch a hole through both sides, ensuring they
line up perfectly. Thread ribbon through and secure
inside, then make up the box.

BECAUSE THE PENS ARE WATER-BASED, THEY CAN BE USED

AS A WASH. JUST PUSH COLOUR INTO CREASES OR TIGHT
CORNERS ON 3-D ITEMS WITH A WET BRUSH
Sharon Bennett, Designer

DECORATED CANDLE
Use a clean tissue to remove any grease or
residue from a candle. Trace the eight-point star
design lightly onto it, then fill the centre in red
wine. Add a gold keyline around it and, once dry,
draw blue lines coming out from the star and add
dots in various colours.
Decorate the body of the star in metallic pink,
violet, metallic gold and white. Apply gold swirls
to the top-left and bottom-right of the star, then
add a gem to the centre. Embellish a selection of
circles with glitter glue. CB

Top tips
If at any time colour stops flowing,
replace the cap and shake a couple of times
Should the colour on the nib pick up
previous colour from the surface, just draw
a few lines onto scrap paper
Choose nib width carefully 1MR is
suitable for fine lines and detail, but go
larger for areas that need extensive colour

BABUSHKA ANIMALS
Stitch unique matryoshka-inspired felt creatures to sell,
and nd out how you can craft for charity

WHAT YOU NEED

Wool felt
Fabric scraps, patterned
Thread, embroidery
Ricrac, narrow

Buttons, small
Card, thin
Toy filling
Pen, ballpoint

Trace our templates from the pattern pages

onto thin card and cut out. Draw around the
card pieces onto felt with a ballpoint pen and
trim inside the line with sharp scissors. You will
need two body pieces, a headscarf, apron, face
pieces, four ears and two ear inners.

Use two strands of toning embroidery

thread to stitch the ear inners to the centres of
two ear shapes. Sew the remaining ears to the
back in small running stitch and lightly stuff
through the base. Set aside.
Oversew the face to the centre of the
headscarf. Lightly mark the position of the eyes,
nose and mouth with a pencil and embroider
the details. Pin the headscarf to one body piece,
matching up the curves, and stitch in place
along the bottom edge only, incorporating ricrac
braid as you do so. Add a small button to the
bottom of the headscarf.

Embroider a oral design in the centre of

the apron. Alternatively, cut patterned fabric
larger than the felt piece and tack the sides over
the edges to cover it. Stitch the apron to the
body below the headscarf and add braid to the
bottom edge. Remove the tacking stitches if
using fabric.
Lightly tack the ears to the back of the head
in the desired position. Pin the remaining body
piece to the reverse of the animal and oversew
all the way round, incorporating the ears as you
do so. Leave an opening at the bottom. Lightly
stuff the animal and close up the gap. CB

MONEY SPINNER
People don't want to see the
same handmade creations
again and again, so these
animals are the perfect way
to intrigue potential
customers. You can make an
entire felt menagerie, giving
each one unique
characteristics.

GENEROUS
CRAFTING
We hear from three
ladies who share
their top tips on
crafting for charity

I have recently started sewing for Be Child

Cancer Aware (bechildcanceraware.org) and
my biggest bit of advice is to make sure you
contact the charity to nd out exactly what it is
they need. For example, the charity I sew for
are using the bags I make for children to
collect their Beads of Courage, so they have
come up with a specic design. I also have a
friend who knits for NICU departments, and
she has to check with the individual hospitals
as they require different things only cotton,
set colours, certain sizes etc. So it's really
important that your time and effort results in
something your chosen charity can use.
Miriam Faulkner, Crafts Beautiful reader
If you'd like to knit for charity, visit
knitforpeace.org.uk. My top tip is to make sure
the charity you give your creation to gives it to
those in need. If they are selling it through, for
example, their charity shops, not all of it gets
sold and it could be sent to the rag merchants.
Make sure your knitting doesn't go to waste!
Dame Hilary Blume, Founder and Director of
the Charities Advisory Trust
My top tip is to keep it fresh and exciting.
There are a lot of people trying to raise money
for charity, so do something a little different.
For example, a set of greeting cards with
matching tags can be very popular, rather than
just one card package them professionally
and always label them with your contact
details for future orders. And don't forget to
enjoy it! It shows and people get caught up in
your enthusiasm. See my work at

BLUE TEALIGHT HOLDER

GREEN TEALIGHT HOLDER

RED TEALIGHT HOLDER

Wash and dry a straight-sided tealight

holder. Pour a little blue glass paint into a foil
tray and use a wedge of sponge to apply it
evenly over the glass. Once dry, roll out a
chunk of air-drying clay onto a vinyl mat to
5mm thick using an acrylic rolling pin. Lay the
holder onto the clay and trim the edges to t
using a cutting blade.

Paint a curved tealight holder with green

glass paint and leave to dry. Wrap the glass in
a sheet of air-drying clay, taking the clay just
under the rim. If it doesnt have a rim, press a
length of string into the clay to create a recess
for elastic to sit.

Follow the instructions for the green

tealight holder, this time painting it in red.
Cut out circles from the clay in a different
formation, then dye with pink. Add an
elastic decoration as before. CB

Apply a little water to the glass and

position the clay around the holder. Place the
ends of the clay over one another and smooth
over with your nger to create a seamless join.
Cut out four large circles equidistant from
each other around the holder with a round
cutter. Use a small at paintbrush moistened
with water to brush around the circles to
neaten them. Between the circles, stamp
snowake motifs into the clay, then leave to
dry out for a few days.
Make up pink dye in a paper cup and apply
with a large at paintbrush evenly over the
holder. When completely dry, apply a second coat
to the stamped elements to create contrast.

PINK TEALIGHT HOLDER

Apply pink glass paint evenly over a straightsided tealight holder. Once dry, roll out air-drying
clay, measure the clay against the glass, trim the
excess, and wrap around the glass.
Cut out various sizes of circles around the
holder. Stamp on different sized snowakes,
then leave the clay to dry out completely.
Apply blue dye evenly and allow to dry.

Cut two rows of small staggered circles

around the top. Stamp small and medium
snowakes into a thin piece of clay and cut
them out, then add a hole to one and set aside.
Moisten the clay and slide the snowakes into
place around the bottom of the holder,
alternating them in size.
Once dry, dye the clay in blue. Paint a
second coat to the snowake embellishments
once the rst has dried. Stain the extra
snowake in pink, attach a 5mm jump ring
and thread onto a length of metallic elastic.
Add a small pink bell and tie around the rim.

OUR
ADVICE...

WHAT YOU NEED

Fabric: red, gingham,
Laura Ashley; red,
spotty, Cath Kidston
Blank, card, kraft
Bags, paper, kraft
Cellophane, clear
Embellishments: twine,

burlap; toppers; tags,

kraft; ribbon, gingham,
red, green
Adhesives: foam pads,
3-D; spray mount; tape,
washi
Punch, eyelet
Eyelets
Spoon, porcelain

Use the spray adhesive in

a well ventilated area and
cover any exposed
surfaces with newspaper

COFFEE BAG
Fold red gingham fabric, 30cm square, in
half right sides together. Sew across the base,
then up 18cm and backstitch. Turn the bag out,
then stitch to the top; this will become the cuff.
Tease out the corners and press.
Place a bag of coffee inside. Wind burlap
string around the top and knot, then suspend
the coffee gift tag. Turn the cuff down twice
to nish.

GIFT TAGS
For the coffee tag, create a rounded green
rectangle with 'Freshly Ground Coffee' written
in white using a computer, or a white gel pen
on green card. Cut out. Stick two sections of
washi tape to the top and bottom of a tag, then
x the green label to the centre. Use an eyelet
punch near the top of the tag, then pop an
eyelet in place. Tie green gingham ribbon
through, adding a porcelain spoon as you go.
For a biscuit tag, cover a label in red spotty
fabric with spray adhesive. Trim away the
excess with scissors. Add a green label to the
middle. Punch out a hole in the top of the tag
and attach an eyelet, then tie red gingham
ribbon and burlap string through. Add two
washi tape rows to the base of the tag.

PAPER BAGS

Add to the
theme with
a gift tag
or card
Fix a row of washi tape up
the sides of a vertical card
blank. Add string and green
gingham ribbon through the
eyelet of a prepared tag, tie
into a bow and x to the front
using foam pads. Position two
greeting toppers diagonally
across the front.

Using two patterned washi tapes, add

two rows to the top and across the bottom.
Tie the biscuit tag to a handle. Secure the tag
to the front at an angle using 3-D foam pads.
Place biscuits to the centre of a clear
cellophane square, then draw the diagonal
corners together and secure using burlap
string. Arrange the excess cellophane into a
ruffle and place inside the bag to nish. CB

create a clash. Be clever with how you arrange simple shapes. Less is more.
H Play with colour. You dont have to just stick to red and white. Try adding
highlights of icy Nordic blues to create a wintry feel. Green will give a nod to

H Make the most of it. Scandi has its roots in traditional crafts, so think

Using the template on our

onto red felt and cut out. Fold one
in half, then in half again, to make
a quarter of a circle. Push a pin
through the point and press into a
Styrofoam ring. Continue in this
way until the ring is covered.
Pin a gingham ribbon loop to
the reverse of the wreath for
hanging. Make a bow out of the
remaining ribbon fold one end
over onto itself by 10cm, and

continue until the whole length

is layered. Sew a couple of small
stitches in the centre to secure.
Push the bow into the wreath
between the ruffles with a pin
and arrange the loops.
Trim ve small and ve large
petals from red felt. Fold each one
in half lengthways and sew a few
running stitches from the bottom
of the petal, two-thirds of the way
to the top. Cut white felt, 1cm x
6cm, to make stamens. Create

small snips all the way along one

long edge to create a fringe. Roll it
up and secure with tacking
stitches. Trim ve green leaves
and attach to the wreath, then pin
the large red petals, small red
petals, and white stamens.
Cut out a white felt spiral
shape. Roll from the outside to
the centre, then secure with
tacking stitches to stop it
unravelling. Repeat to make a
total of three roses. Trim four

rose leaves from green felt.

Decide on the position of the
main poinsettia and push a pin
through the stem of all ve large
green leaves spread them out in
a fan shape and push into the
wreath. Next, pin a large pink petal
in the centre. Add the ve smaller
petals in the same way, then
secure the white stamen in the
middle. Pin the rose leaves either
side of the poinsettia and attach
the white roses. CB

place pre-cut pieces of sugarpaste onto them. Finally,

settle down with a cup of Earl Grey and nibble on a few
of these biscuits before bedtime on Christmas eve.

Biscuit base

Preheat an oven to 180C. Rub butter,

flour and spices in a bowl to fine
breadcrumbs, then add sugar, almonds
and almond extract. Stir in the egg and knead
into a ball. Wrap the dough in cling film and
chill for 30 minutes, then roll out to a thickness
of 7mm. Use icing sugar to stop it sticking.
Using the downloadable templates from
our website, cut four sets of crowns and
skates. To make a wreath, cut a cookie
from a round cutter and trim out the inner
using a fluted one, then poke with a straw at the
top. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden.

Crowns

Attach a no. 2 nozzle to a piping bag, fill

with gold royal icing and outline each
crown 3mm from the edge, then the hole.
Thin the icing down and flood the inside, filling
the gaps using a paintbrush. Leave to dry.
Add white royal icing lines and pearls to
the base. Pipe three fleur de lys emblems
and join with scallops. Dot pearls around
the top and add another fleur de lys. Leave to
dry, then thread ribbon through the hole.

Wreaths

Create four bows from ribbon, then

roll out 'berries' from red and gold
sugarpaste. Snip a 'v' into a piping bag
filled with green icing, then starting from the
top pressure pipe a garland down both sides.
While the icing is still wet, fix the bows
and berries into place. Leave to dry, then
thread ribbon through the holes.

Skates

Roll red sugarpaste, 2mm, and cut out

four skates. Fix them into position on
the cookies and stick, using a little royal
icing as glue. Add a pattern with a star tool.
Zig zag white royal icing to the top using a
star nozzle, then pipe straight at the base.
Leave to dry. Roll brown sugarpaste and
taper one end to a point, then secure to make
the blade. Add ribbon to finish. CB

Love it!
TO MAKE THE QUILT
Prepare your fabrics by cutting two or three
6cm strips from each design; cut across the Stripe
pattern. Separate the fabrics into lights (ve prints)
and darks (three prints). Take the Fruit Wedge fabric
and a light print, then cut a 6cm square from each
strip. Sew these together and press the resulting
rectangle at with your nger.
Take another strip of light fabric and pin right
side together to the long edge of the rectangle.
Stitch in place and nger press at. Draw a line
straight line across the fabric using a ruler as a
guide, level with the original rectangle, then cut to
make a square panel.
Refer to the template on the pattern pages and
start to arrange the strips until the block is 32cm,
with has two sides in a dark print and the opposite
sides in a light stripe. Press the seams to one side
on the reverse of the panel.
Make a second block in the same way, however
this time use the fabrics in a different order so that
the different prints are used up equally. Save any
leftover pieces of fabric strip as they can be
stitched together to make a usable length.
Make 12 blocks in total and stitch together in a
3 x 4 grid, matching up the seams where necessary.
Ensure that all blocks are laid out in the same
direction, light to dark. The quilt top will appear to
have striped sashing between each block. Add
strips of the same fabric to the remaining two
edges to make a complete border.

Fold in 5mm along the edges and press,

mitring the corners. Lay the white cotton fabric
down, place the wadding on top and position the
quilt top over the stack. Pin in place at regular
intervals. Stitch 'in the ditch' on either side of the
sashing strips and the inside of the border to hold
the layers together.
Trim the wadding to the size of the quilt top.
Cut the backing fabric, 2cm larger than the quilt
top. Fold the edges over the wadding to line up
with the pressed edges of the quilt top and mitre
the corners. Pin and top stitch the edges together
2mm from the hem. CB

BOOK COVER
Trim an old embroidered table cloth to 31cm
x 21cm. Fold it in half and mark the middle with
a line of pins; this will become the front and back
of your book, so choose a piece that has some
nice embroidery on it. Cut out two poppy heads
from the printed fabric and back with iron-on
interfacing. Trim a piece of script print fabric, a
number 11 and a short length of old lace.
Take wadding the same size and lay the book
front on top, right side up. Arrange the cut pieces
on the right-hand side of the pins; this will be the
front of your book. Pin in place before machine or
hand stitching through the wadding. At the lefthand side of the pins, stitch a rectangle of script
printed fabric with a scrap of lace.
Stamp remember in black ink on the back
cover and never forget on the front. Cut two
25cm lengths of ribbon, then stitch one on each
side of the cover so they meet when you close
the book. Remove pins and set aside. Trim blue
fabric the same size and mark the middle with
pins. Place a vintage photograph on the left, lay
short lengths of cotton lace across three
corners and stitch in place. Add small fabric
scraps and a poppy for interest. Stamp your
relative's name onto a length of cotton trim and
fix down the side of the photograph.

SO MUCH INFORMATION
CAN BE LOST BETWEEN
GENERATIONS THIS TACTILE
MEMORY BOOK CAN BECOME
A TREASURED HEIRLOOM FOR
YOUR FAMILY
Carolyn Letten, Designer
On the right-hand side of the pins,
cut an old ticket or coupon from printed
fabric and lay it across the back of a
postcard. Cut three fabric scraps, a
small snippet of lace and a section of
embroidery from a piece of table linen.
Arrange as shown and sew lines of
machine stitching in red. Add a pearl
button under the embroidery for detail.

ASSEMBLE THE BOOK

Take the nished front and back
cover and lay it wadding side up.
Position the pages you have just
nished, right side up onto the wadding
and pin in place all around the edges.
Now machine stitch all the way around,
1cm in from the edge, three times to
make sure you dont stitch across the
ribbon closures. Trim excess fabric from
the edge, almost up to the stitching line.
Sew a central line down the middle to
form the spine of the book. Set aside.
To make the additional pages, cut
a rectangle of pale blue print, 20cm
x 30cm, slightly smaller than before,
and mark the middle with pins. On the
right-hand side, stitch a rectangle of
map print fabric to the bottom half. Back
a fabric poppy with interfacing and sew
it to the top right of the page. Add a
number 11 as well as small pieces of
fabric and lace. Iron on the reverse.
On the left side of the pins, hand or
machine stitch an old postcard at an
angle. Sew ribbon across the bottom,
then back a poppy with interfacing and
stitch it to the bottom left of the
postcard. Finish the page with a scrap
of old lace to the top right of the
postcard and a large blue button to the
poppy centre. Set aside.
Trim script fabric, 20cm x 30cm, and
mark the middle with pins. On the left
side of the pins, stitch an old photograph
at an angle. Attach lace across the top
and sew on a poppy, poppy bud and
bright fabric scrap. Hand stitch a large
pearl button at the bottom-left.

Lay the reverse of a written

postcard at an angle. Tuck two
contrasting pieces of fabric under the
left side of the postcard and machine in
place. Stitch an orange triangle of fabric
as shown. Interface a large poppy head,
place as shown, but before stitching,
tuck a collage effect of fabric scraps and
lace underneath it. Stitch a small navy
button to the poppy centre.
To make up these middle pages, take
the last page that you set aside and lay it
wrong side up. Take the middle page and
lay it on top, right side up, pin together.
Machine stitch all the way around three
times and trim excess close to the stitch
line. Lay this section on top of the rst
front and back cover section and stitch
down the middle to secure. CB

Adding detail to photographs

Use a simple punch technique to give a special photo
a decorative edge. We recommend that you copy the
photo rst, then add the punched edge to the copy and
save the original. Now turn it into a matching tag that
goes nicely with the journal. Punch a hole in the top
left corner and thread a length of union jack ribbon
through it for tying.

We love a crafty tip that saves us

money, so why not tune in to
exciting new TV show Crafty
Beggars for inspiration?
Presented by actress Julie
Peasgood and television
personality Wendy Turner
Webster, the seven-part series
sees creative enthusiasts face
the ultimate crafty challenge
over a two day period. On the
first day, contestants are given
a few hours and a small
budget to buy, borrow and beg all the items
they need to produce a range of handmade
crafts that are good enough to sell. Then it's
time to get making! On the second day, the
teams must sell their crafts side-by-side in a
busy town centre and whoever makes the
most cash wins.

Catch the first episode on TLC (Discovery

Channel) on 3rd November at 9am!

I love the new Cassie Brown LED

Lamp (320579). The lightbulb in my
old crafting lamp needed replacing
and then I saw this new one that has
Daylight LEDs so it doesnt need the
bulbs replacing ever! How fab is
that? Its also a magnifier and comes
with a free pair of curved scissors.

CRAFT OF THE MONTH

Ive recently discovered shadow printing, which is a brand new technique that uses sunlight
to print onto fabric. Featuring special inks, you can utilise your favourite embellishments,
lace or just everyday household items such as safety pins (anything that will cast a shadow!)
to create gorgeous designs on your favourite materials. I have actually used my Tattered Lace
die-cuts with the kit, to create a fabulous shadow printed pillow.

Hot Product

My favourite
product at the
moment is the
Embellishment
Attic Bow
Maker
(321842). It's
designed to
make bows
quick and easy,
using an array of materials such as lace, ribbon
and cord. Many people struggle to make pretty
ones, including myself. They can be so fiddly! But
with the bow maker, you can make perfect double
and triple designs with ease. Visit
createandcraft.tv for more info.

LOOK WHAT
I MADE!
I dont send too many Christmas
cards, so I like to take my time and
make the ones I do really special.
This greeting uses a lovely winter
colour combination icy blue and
white. To create the card, matt and
frame, I've used my square nesting
dies, plus pearlescent card. I then
used my fave Christmas die the
Krystal Square and sprayed the
snowflake with adhesive, before
coating it with crystal glitter and
embellishing the corner using
more dies. Plus white pompoms
and blue ribbon too!

Something
Ive learned...
This month I learned how to make
honey-based hand cream! My husband
keeps bees at the bottom of the garden
and I wanted to make the most of it, as
there is only so much you can eat! I've
scented it with wild rose, and it smells
absolutely gorgeous.
