Problem Set #6

1. A built-up beam has been constructed by nailing

together seven planks as shown. The nails are equally
spaced along the beam and the beam supports a vertical
load. As proved in mechanics of materials, the shearing
forces exerted on the nails at A and B are proportional to
the first moments with respect to the centroidal x axis of
the shaded areas shown, respectively, in parts a and b of
the figure. Knowing that the force exerted on the nail at A
is 120 N, determine the force exerted on the nail at B.

2. Knowing that the figure shown is formed of a thin

homogeneous wire, determine the length l of portion CE of
the wire for which the center of gravity of the figure is
located at point C, when (a) 15 , (b) 60 .
3. Determine by direct integration the centroid of the areas shown below.

4. The rim of a double-groove V-belt sheave of 10-in.

outside diameter is made of cast iron and weights 4.50 lb.
Knowing that the cross-sectional area of the rim is 0.570
in2, determine the distance y from the axis of rotation AA
to the centroid of the cross section of the rim. (Specific
weight of cast iron=0.264 lb/in3.)

5. For the machine element shown, locate the z coordinate

of the center of gravity.

6. Half the cross section of the steel housing is shown in

the figure. There are six 10-mm-diameter bolt holes around
its rim. Determine its mass. The density of steel is 7.85
Mg/m3. The housing is a full circular part.
