Summative Assessment

Throughout the unit, I collected end-of-class checks that required the students to
answer questions mainly based on the mini lessons for that day. These end-of-class
checks served as a way for me to recognize whether or not the students understood the
material this unit on a daily basis. As another way of informally assessing the students, I
constantly walked around the room and had mini conferences with the students as they
were writing. This served as a way for me to keep them on task and to also check for
understanding.
As the formal end-of-unit assessment, the students had to put together a story that
they would share on the last day of our unit at our author’s celebration. I invited the
families of my students to come and listen to their child read their small moment story.
These stories were written with the influence of Angela Johnson and Patricia Polacco and
therefore include some of their writing strategies. These stories will really give me the
opportunity to see how much students have taken away from the unit because after
reading them and listening to the students read them aloud, I will be able to notice if they
have incorporated the authors’ strategies into their writing. This assessment will also
enable students to demonstrate their academic achievement. By having them read their
stories to an audience, they can recognize how much they have achieved and how proud
their families are of them.
In order to score the children on their performance assessment, I have created a
rubric that I will be using when I take their stories home after the author's celebration. It
will be a class list with columns for ellipses, comeback lines, exclamation points,
detail, and about the author blurbs. These are some of the main writing techniques the
children were supposed to have learned during this unit. Therefore, I will expect that
they use at least two of these techniques in their stories. If not, I can assume they
either didn't grasp some of the material or they didn't pick up on the fact that they
were supposed to include them in their stories.
