To encourage students to
create images in their minds to support the
understanding of concepts or problems to be
solved (Herrell & Jordan, 2012).

To verbally prompt the students

in creating mind-pictures that enables them
to imagine a scene that is being described in

Research Based Learning

Strategies (provide text
chapters/reference)

Imaging can be used in a

wide variety of classroom
situations (Herrell & Jordan,
2012, p. 181).

All strategies will be research based and from one of the texts. Please provide reference for each.
Motivation strategy: Direct Method
(Building Background for ELD Students)

and Natural Approach (Horwitz, 2013).

-I would begin to conduct in the target language, which is English.

-I would prepare the instructions for the lesson material for the class.
-I would give the instructions to the class.
-I would identify an area in the curriculum where imaging could be applied to help the
students.
Presentation/ Learning Activities (Strategy Steps)

Direct Method and Natural Approach

(Horwitz, 2013).
(includes language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies , interaction, feedback

-I would then introduce an imaging activity to the students to make that curriculum more
understandable.
-I would then create mental picture through the words that I would say to the students.
-An example being that that I would have the students create a mental picture on a
summary of a book they just read.
-I would then ask them to tell me in detail what they see in their mental picture based on
what they read and imaged.
Practice and Application Direct Method and Natural Approach (Horwitz,
(Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application, feedback)

2013).

-I would then assess the students understanding and progress with the activity in the
classroom.

-I would also add technology if it needed to be used to enhance the learning for this lesson.
-I would then assign a similar activity for the students to do at home as homework so that
they could get better practice with this type of activity.
-I would also ask the parents to help their students with this activity so that the students
could enhance their learning by having assistance in this activity.
Review and Assessment: (What specific assessment tools are being used)

The assessment tools being used would be in how the students described their mental
image and how ell they understood the concept of mental imaging. This is how the progress
of the student would show in regards to this lesson and activity. I would also adapt my
teaching style of the student needed help in a specific content or curriculum. The parents
input would also be important for the students future educational goals.
Extension:
What are your next steps for future lessons?

The next steps would be to help the students to use more complex imaging for areas in
their class work or projects they needed help in. This would further the students knowledge
of mental imaging and its usage in classwork. It would also help me further develop future
lesson of a similar nature for the classroom.
ReflectionWhat do you anticipate to be a problem for specific students?

ELD Objective-

That the students would not be able to expand written sentences to

include rich, descriptive language in their activities (Herrell & Jordan, 2012). The
students would need to be able to write down what they saw in their mental image
in order for them to be able to verbally do the same.
Content Objective- That the students would not be able to illustrate literature based
on their interpretation of the text (Herrell & Jordan, 2012). The students would
need to be able to describe their mental image in order for them to participate in
the class lesson.

What would likely go well? Why?

Most of the students would be able to clearly describe their mental image. Those who
need help with the concept of imaging, I would further describe to them the process of
imaging. Their interactions with their classmates would also help clarify how mental
imaging worked.
What would you like to be more sure about?

The students that need help with their mental imaging to ask for it from the teacher or
their classmates. Also, that they would be able to thoroughly describe their mental
image. That they are prepared for more complex classwork in the future and are able to
apply mental imaging to this of needed. Finally, that their rate of learning would remain
steady with that of my lesson plans.
What theory or theorists would most strongly support use of this strategy?

The theories that support this strategy are the natural approach and direct method. In
the natural approach, the students would participate in small group conversational
activities with each other and follow instructions given to them by the teacher to
complete said activity. In the direct method, they give feedback on the lessons. This is
how these two theories support the current strategy and its current use.
