ASSIGNMENT 1: ACTIVE POWER AND FREQUENCY CONTROL

DUE: FEBRUARY 1, 2015 AT 6:00 pm

1. Draw a control block diagram of a two-area power system connected by an ac transmission

line. The droop setting, inertia, and the load-frequency sensitivity of the two areas are as
follows (all values are in pu on the rating of respective areas):

Area 1
Area 2

R (%)

Area 1
Area 2

Rating
Generation Load
4000 MW 3500 MW
3000 MW
2000 MW 1000 MW
1500 MW

The rating in the above table is the net rating of all spinning generators in the system.
(a) Determine the power flow in the tie line.
(b) What is the spinning reserve in each area.
(c) If the load in Area 1 is suddenly changed to 3100 MW, determine the steady state error
in frequency in Area 2.
(d) What are the initial rate of change of frequencies in Areas 1 and 2?
(e) Simulate the response of frequencies of the two areas and the tie line power assuming
typical data for thermal power systems.
(f) Repeat (b) and (c) above if the tie line is a dc line.

ASSIGNMENT 1: ACTIVE POWER AND FREQUENCY CONTROL

2. A control area consists of three generating stations. Their ratings and droop settings are as
follows:
G1: 2000 MW, droop=5%
G2: 2000 MW, droop=4%
G3: 1000 MW, No frequency control
(a) Determine the equivalent R of the area.
(b) If the load-frequency sensitivity, D, is 0.75 per unit determine the Area Frequency Response Characteristics parameter .
(c) What is the steady state frequency error following a load increase of 100 MW.
