Improving Communication for Voiceless ICU Patients. RO1# HD-04-3988-01. $1,250,000 5-year
modular NICHD grant submitted in response to RFA-HD-02-002 Augmentative and Alternative
Communication Strategies for Treatment of Acquired Cognitive-Linguistic Disorders. I was a coinvestigator at .20 FTE; jointly developed project, wrote grant proposal and developed methodological
procedures for implementing treatment paradigms, collecting and analyzing data with Mary Beth Happ,
Ph.D. R.N., in the School of Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh. This 6-year project obtained baseline
data on communication patterns of nonspeaking, intubated patients in the intensive care unit; then
implemented a nurse/caregiver training protocol and AAC intervention with experimental groups;
differences in interaction and quality of life were obtained via quantitative and qualitative analyses.
