Improving Communication for Voiceless ICU Patients. RO1# HD-04-3988-01. $1,250,000 5-year
modular NICHD grant submitted in response to RFA-HD-02-002 Augmentative and Alternative
Communication Strategies for Treatment of Acquired Cognitive-Linguistic Disorders. I was a coinvestigator at .20 FTE; jointly developed project, wrote grant proposal and developed methodological
procedures for implementing treatment paradigms, collecting and analyzing data with Mary Beth Happ,
Ph.D. R.N., in the School of Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh. This 6-year project obtained baseline
data on communication patterns of nonspeaking, intubated patients in the intensive care unit; then
implemented a nurse/caregiver training protocol and AAC intervention with experimental groups;
differences in interaction and quality of life were obtained via quantitative and qualitative analyses.

Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Technology: Research in Chronic and Critical Illness. Served as a
multidisciplinary training faculty in predoctoral and postdoctoral program for health care professionals.
Hinds, A., & Garrett, K. (awarded May 2000) Perceptions of the Impact of Tangible Context on
Conversational Interactions with a Person Who has Aphasia. $570, ASHA Foundation Mentoring in
Higher Education Grant. Mentored a masters student in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the

University of Pittsburgh to develop a project, apply for funding, and implement data collection and
summarization at Duquesne University.

Investigator Award. One of only 4 grants awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation
each year to support new researchers in speech-language pathology. Following completion of the research,
