Scrambled Paragraphs
a. Themes and words that appear in specific sections of the paragraph
i. e.g. conclusion phrases like All in all, today, etc.
b. Structural Keywords
i. Sequence words that indicate chronological order
e.g. Next, After that, first, last, years and dates
ii. Continuity words that continue previous ideas
e.g. Furthermore, thus, therefore, for example
iii. Contrast words that change topic (as used in the phrase compare and contrast)
e.g. However, but, although, even though, on the other hand
iv. Pronouns and Antecedents
e.g. he, she, it, their, them, they, his, her.
v. Repetition and synonyms across sentences
Logical Reasoning
a. In Code Games, be sure to look at rule 3.
b. With Contrapositive Questions, remember your notation rules (A B), linking sentences
together and if necessary, to rearrange sentences to have the If portion first.
c. Know the difference between All, None and Some.
d. Dont assume information, and use only whats given to you.
e. Draw charts and diagrams.
f. In Sequencing Games, know the difference between left of and directly left of, etc.
i. Another example: if x is in between y and z, that doesnt always mean y is left of x.
Possible orders could be y x z and z x y.
Reading Comprehension
a. Labeling Paragraphs
b. Main Idea
i. Encompasses the whole story
ii. Sometimes may not be mentioned in every paragraph, but you can figure out by
getting a feel for the story and its themes
iii. Not always directly mentioned in the introduction
c. Detail
i. Look back in the story to verify details
ii. Do not mix up what is in the passage with what isnt
iii. Some details may be changed around in the answer choices, so be careful
d. Definition
i. Look for context clues before and after the sentence of the word
e. Inference
i. What is the authors tone?
ii. What is he trying to say?
iii. Is he for something, against something?
