ENERGY RESOURCES

INVESTIGATION
1

Our technological world runs on tremendous

amounts of energy. This need seems to be escalating
with each decade, and certain non-renewable energy
sources are beginning to run out.
We tend to rely on electricity produced from hydro and fossil fuels;
however, electricity can be produced from a number of sources. Each
method has its advantages and disadvantages.
Your task :
One group will be made up of 4 students (you choose your partners,
but teacher reserves the right to change or adjust groups).
Each group will research one kind of energy resource and will then:
A. submit a task list for group members
B. submit a bibliography in MLA format
C. submit a written report of about 8 pages or 2 pages per
student (typed, 12pt font, 2 margins, double spaced, excluding
diagrams)
D. prepare a Google Slides presentation on your research
(about 8 min or 2 minutes / person, plus a 2 minute question
period. This may include a video clip of up to 2 minutes related
to your topic.
E. Prepare a handout summarizing your main points and
important information for the students.
F. Prepare a small quiz for the class to complete with 8
questions regarding your presentation (2 questions per student)
At the end of all the presentations, each student will have to write a
reflection on the most interesting things that they learned.
Energy topics: (one group/ topic; will be determined by random draw)
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

7)

Oil
Nuclear (uranium)
Hydroelectric (water)
Solar (light)
Geothermal (terrestrial crust)
Aeolian (wind)
Thermal (Combustible fossils: coal, gasoline, natural

gas)
8) Chemical (wood, agricultural wastes, bio-gas)

2. Explain the technology involved in using this fuel in
Canada.
- equipment, chemistry, physics
3. Is this a renewable or non-renewable resource? Explain.
4. What percentage of Canadas energy and the worlds
energy is supplied from this energy source?
5. How efficient and cost effective is it compared to other
forms of energy?
6. Where in Canada is this energy used?
7. Are there beneficial and harmful effects on the
