Closing the Achievement Gap Using Culturally Responsive Literature

with Haydee Smith
Friday, February 20 (evening) & Saturday, February 21, 2015
1 Credit Available

By having multicultural literature infused into the core content areas, students gain a richer
knowledge base, and they understand the importance of celebrating cultural diversity. Students
taught in this way gain an improved sense of self-esteem and self-worth as their heritage is being
publicly acknowledged within the classroom setting. Within this course educators will be exposed
to a wide variety of multicultural trade books and together educators will discuss ways to infuse
the literature into their daily lesson plans.

Differentiation in the Mainstream Classroom

with Amy Melik
Saturday, February 21, 2015
1 Credit Available

We all know what differentiation is and understand that one size does not fit the unique needs of
the diverse learners in our classroom. Often, it's simply a lack of time that prevents us from
differentiating more often. By choosing this workshop, you will learn a variety of quick and easy
strategies on how to differentiate curriculum, lessons, and activities that can be considered Tier 1
and Tier 2 accommodations within the RtI framework.
Please bring a complete unit of study that you would like to differentiate together.
