Dear Miles Family,

Hello! My name is Nikki Bivins and I am the Miles Intermediate Media Specialist. Even
though this is my 7th year as a media specialist, I have had 11 years of experience as a
classroom teacher; so believe me that I understand. I am here to assist you in any way
possible to ensure that all of our students meet and exceed all of the district/ state
standards. If there is anything in particular that you need, please do not hesitate to ask.
Below is some information that you should find very useful concerning the media center.

The Miles Intermediate Library Media Program provides instruction, resources, and
services to assist students and teachers in becoming critical thinkers in the pursuit and
ideas of information.
The Media Specialist, Mrs.N.Bivins realizes this and will provide the following:

To support you in any way possible to ensure that our students meet and exceed
the informational/ media literacy skills.
Provide small group instruction to students/ remedial and or enrichment. These
lessons include information/ research skills, literature extension/appreciation, oral
language activities and the use of technology.
The Library Media Specialist and the grade level team will plan collaboratively at
least once a month to ensure that lessons are relevant to classroom units of
study and individual student needs are met.
Assist with projects and research.

Book Checkout Hours: The Media Center is open for checkout during school hours.
Teachers may send groups of no more than six at a time to check-out books.
Loan Period: 2 weeks (Reference materials and magazines may not be checked out).
Students may check up to two books during this time (if no books have been checkedout previously on their record).

An official Media Pass will be required in order for students to enter the media
center unless accompanied by a teacher/staff member. (Please see attached for
passes).

Overdue notices will be issued once a month to students. Please ensure that
students receive these notices.

Please consider joining the Media Committee. We will meet approximately only
three times a year in the Media Center. Look out for upcoming news
All students coming to the Library Media Center for activities other than
scheduled classes will need to bring a media center pass. Please make sure
that all of the information is filled out prior to having students come to the media
center. There will only be six students allowed in the media center on one group
pass.
If you would like me to have small group instruction/ research assistance, there
are to be no more than 6-8 students at a time. This will allow me to give
individual attention to students.

REQUEST FOR MATERIALS forms are provided for teachers. Using these will
ensure that teachers get materials when they are needed. These forms should
be turned in prior to the date and time items are needed so that the Media
Specialist can better coordinate the fair use of resources.

Videos/ DVDs should be requested in writing and usage documented in lesson

plans. Videos should be rewound and returned at the completion of viewing.
Please request these items at least 24 hours in advance.

Poster making and lamination is only permitted by me to execute. Please fill out
a request form and place it on top of your materials when submitting. For small
requests, materials will be ready within 30 minutes. Larger requests depending
on the time will have to be picked up on the following day. Poster making and
lamination will be done on Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30am- 12:00pm.

 Please refrain from sending students to the media center during instructional time
to play online non-instructional video games. **This will not be allowed and
students will be sent back to class.
Entire Class Media Sign-up
Beginning in September at Miles, your grade level will be required to complete a class
project once a month. Your class will come to the media center once a week, so that I
may assist you with the project completion while exposing students to the media
resources, and skills needed to be successful. We will plan collaboratively prior to the
monthly visits to ensure that the resources are available. Entire class sign-up is
available Monday-Wednesday of each week with the exception of the Book fair week.
The sign-up sheet will be available on Thursday for the following week on the media
center circulation desk. More information will follow
Accelerated Reader Program
Students will be required to read a minimum of 25 books this school year. Please
require that all students read outside of the classroom and are required to take at least
one AR tests a week. All students should be checking out at least on Accelerated
Reader book during checkout. A report will be given to you once a month on your
students status. Please see the AR Program Implementation document for additional
information.
Six Flags Reading Program
L.P. Miles will be participating in the Six Flags Reading Program again this year, stay
tuned for more information.
Pizza Hut Book-It Program
Students will have an opportunity to earn free pizza each month for reaching his/her
reading goal in their homeroom class.
