Agroupofmusclecellsarebundledtogetherbycollagentoformafascicle.Sincemuscle
cellsareelongatedandcylindrical,eachmusclecellisusuallycalledamusclefiber.In
skeletalmuscle,themusclefibersareverylarge,multinucleated,anduptoseveral
millimetersinlength.Lookingatonemusclefiber,youwillseethatalmosttheentire
crosssectionofthemusclefiberistakenupbylong,cylindricalstrandsofcontractile
proteinscalledmyofibrils.Typicallytherearehundredsoftheseinonecrosssectionofa
musclefiber.Lookingatonemyofibril,weseethatitisdividedintosegmentscalled
sarcomeres.

Thesearethecontractileunitsofamuscle.AdarkstripecalledaZdiscmarkstheendsof
onesarcomereandthebeginningofthenext.Sarcomeresarecomposedofthickfilaments
andthinfilaments.ThethinfilamentsareattachedatoneendtoaZdiscandextend
towardthecenterofthesarcomere.Thethickfilaments,bycontrast,lieatthecenterof
thesarcomereandoverlapthethinfilaments.Calciumtriggerscontractionbyreaction
withregulatoryproteinsthatintheabsenceofcalciumpreventinteractionofactinand
myosin.Twodifferentregulatorysystemsarefoundindifferentmuscles.Inactinlinked
regulationtroponinandtropomyosinregulateactinbyblockingsitesonactinrequiredfor
complexformationwithmyosininmyosinlinkedregulationsitesonmyosinareblocked
intheabsenceofcalcium.
