TUTORIAL 1
HUMIDIFICATION OPERATIONS
1. A gas (B) benzene (A) mixture is saturated at 1 bar and 320 K. Calculate
the absolute humidity if B is
a) Nitrogen
b) Carbon dioxide
2. At a certain location in a dryer where benzene is being evaporated from a
solid, nitrogen gas at 50 oF and 1.2 atm has a relative humidity for benzene
of 35%. Determine:
a) Partial pressure of benzene if the vapor pressure of benzene at
50oF is 45.6 torr.
b) Humidity of the nitrogen-benzene mixture.
c) Saturation humidity of the mixture.
d) Percentage humidity of the mixture.
3. Air at 160oF has a wet bulb temperature of 102oF. The vapor pressure of
water is 4.745 lbf/in2 at 160oF. Determine the relative humidity, dew point
temperature and percentage humidity.
4. For atmospheric air at 30oC and wet bulb temperature of 20oC, determine
by using psychrometric chart:
a) the percentage relative humidity
b) the specific (absolute) humidity
c) the dew point temperature
d) the specific volume of dry air
5. Consider a room that contains air at 1 atm (101.325 kPa), 35 oC and 40%
relative humidity. Using the psychrometric chart, determine:
a) the specific (absolute) humidity
b) the enthalpy
c) the wet bulb temperature
d) the dew point temperature
e) the specific volume of dry air.
6. Air entering a dryer has a temperature (dry bulb temperature) of 58 oC and
a dew point of 28.7oC. Determine:
a) the humidity
b) the percentage relative humidity

c) the humid heat

d) the humid volume
7. In an air-conditioning system, 1 kg/s air at 350 K and 10 percent humidity
is mixed with 5 kg/s air at 300 K and 30 percent humidity. Determine the
enthalpy, humidity and temperature of the resultant stream.
8. 0.15 kg/s steam at atmospheric pressure and superheated to 400 K is bled
into an air stream at 320 K and 20 percent relative humidity. Determine
the temperature, enthalpy and relative humidity of the mixed stream if the
air is flowing at 5 kg/s.
