STUDENT ASSESSMENT
PROCEDURES INFORMATION
Please read this information carefully as it relates directly to you and your assessments this
year. This Department follows the Cambridge High School Assessment Policy
OBJECTIVES

To fairly assess students against the NQF Standards

Procedures
a) Late and Missed Assessment

Students receive an assessment statement at the start of the year

indicating probable assessment dates and further assessment
opportunities if they are available. Assessment dates will be
confirmed well before the assessment is given to students.
Assessments must be completed on the confirmed dates. If absent
from the assessment, a Missed Assessment Application form must
be filled out and given to Mrs McKinnon - generally in advance of
the assessment.
The reduction of a grade for being late is not permitted. The grade
earned must be awarded to the student.

Assessment deadlines must be met. If the student does not hand in

work by the due date and has not been granted an extension by the
Principals Nominee, Mrs McKinnon, then no credits can be awarded
for that assessment.
In some cases, authentic accumulated evidence for the particular
standard can also be used to determine a grade but this can only
be considered if appropriate and if enough evidence exists to show
the student has reached the standard.
NOTE failure to hand a genuine effort in on the first attempt may
affect the support and guidance the teacher is able to offer on any
further assessment opportunity - if there is one available.

Appeals
After receiving an assessment decision, students have two weeks to
appeal their awarded grade. Students can also appeal Breaches of
Rules decisions.
If an appeal is made, and the issue has not been resolved with the
subject teacher, then the matter should be referred to the HOF
through the Appeals Form. A decision must be made by the HOF
within 14 days, if the student is not happy with the outcome, then
the appeal form will be passed to the Principals Nominee who will
investigate. The decision will be made in seven days and the
outcome is final.
Breaches of Rules
Work submitted by students must be their own. Authenticity means
students MUST NOT:
Copy other students work
Use the teachers work i.e. quoting lengths of teachers notes
Expect too much teacher assistance especially with a
resubmission
Copy work from another source e.g. Internet, books etc
Electronic dictionaries may be used for internal assessment
only where criteria of the standard allows
Storage of Assessments
Assessments will be kept until there are new assessments to
replace them, generally on a twelve months cycle.
Further Assessment Opportunities
Further Assessment Opportunities Policy 2013

Initial TASK

A resubmit if close to an
Achieved on the Standard
RESUBMIT improve initial
result

A teacher does NOT have to offer a Further Assessment opportunity if not appropriate
or feasible.
HOWEVER
Further assessment opportunities offered must be clearly visible in the students
Course outline at the start of the year in 2013.
Special Needs Assessment
Students with special learning needs are generally identified
prior to Year 11 by the SENCO on enrolment. Provision will be
made for these students to have valid and fair assessment
conditions, consistent with the assistance they would normally
have as part of their learning environment and in accordance
with the schools Student with Special Needs policy. This will
apply to internal and external assessments.
Derived Grades Process

Teachers will keep records of student progress toward all

assessed standards. Candidates with significant impaired
performance in external assessments may apply to NZQA
through the Principals Nominee for consideration. This would
be temporary illness, non-permanent disability or other, in a
close to specified period during the external assessment.
These decisions will be mostly reliant on the internal practice
examinations or other authentic way a teacher can show a
student would have achieved the standard(s)
