The student will be able to find the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, and
dimes.
Performance Objective (use an action verb in a description of a
measurable outcome):
When shown a collection of pennies, nickels, and dimes, students will correctly
identify the names of each coin 9 out of 10 times.
When shown a collection of pennies, nickels, and dimes, students will correctly sort
them according to their values 9 out of 10 times.

Materials & Aids (what you will need in order to teach this activity):
1. Vocabulary words printed on cards with the pictures of each type of coin.
2. At least one penny, one nickel, and one dime for each student
3. White boards and markers for each student
4. My Coin Wallet worksheet (attached)

Procedures:
a. Focusing event (how you will begin the lesson and attract the
childrens attention):
Show students a penny, nickel, and dime. Ask them what they are. Ask
them what they are used for.
b. Student Participation (how you will get the students to participate
and stay on task):
Call specifically on students and encourage all students to get involved in
the activity.
c. Teaching procedures (step-by-step directions for what and how you
will teach):
1. Show students a penny, a nickel, and a dime.
2. Introduce the vocabulary- penny, nickel, and dime, and place the words
on the board.
3. Put students in groups of three. Give each student a penny, a nickel, and
a dime. Ask them to work together to learn the names of each coin, and the
value of each coin.
4. Ask the students to hold up the correct coin when named.
5. Give the students individual white boards and markers. Ask them to
write down the value of each coin and hold it up so you can check for
correctness.
6. Have the students complete My Coin Wallet worksheet (attached)
d. Closure (how you will end the learning activity):

As students complete the worksheet, review with them one more time each
type of coin. Then, ask them to name the coin that they would most like to find
on the sidewalk, based on their value.
Assessment
a. Formative check (progress checks throughout the learning activity):
1. Questions during discussion.
2. Listen to students while they are in their groups.
3. Visual check during the coin identification activity.
4. Visual check during the coin value identification activity
5. Visual check of white board answers.
b. Summative assessment (how you will measure outcomes to
determine if the material has been learned):
The teacher will grade the students worksheets.
Adaptations for special needs (based on IFSP or IEP):
Receptive Language Disorder:
Give students a written copy of the directions that are to be followed during the
activities. Also, inform the students in the group to be patient while waiting for the
students answer. Also, give the student the opportunity to write their responses
down if necessary.
Lesson Extensions
For More Practice:
Have the students do a money matching activity where they will name the value of
the coin when its name is said.
For More Challenge:
Have students think of the different coins that can be used to make a certain money
total. Also, inform students of the value of a quarter.
