Dictionary For Rugby, My Discourse Community (SWA 1)

The Pitch-The equivalent to a rugby players church, or sacred grounds. The field of
play, which is a hundred and forty-four meters long with a seventy meter width.

Scrum- The scrum occurs due to infractions or penalties. Both teams Packs (see
definition for Forwards) will pack in close to one another in order to push or move
the other pack to gain possession of the ball after the referee has given the signal to
push.

Line Out- Occurs when the ball goes out of play due to a player going out of bounds
or the ball crossing over the sidelines. In setline outs the ball must be thrown in
straight and overhead so usually someone will be lifted in the air to try and grab
possession of the thrown bal

Forwards-The bigger, stronger, and heavier players that use these factors to drive the
ball further up the field. The eight forwards on the field collectively are called The
Pack and take part in the different set piece contests for ball possession (i.e. rucks,
mauls, scrums, lineouts, and kick returns).
Backs-Provide speed and agility usually in the process of scoring. They tend to be the
smaller, faster and more elusive players on the pitch. They use their skill sets to pick
holes and gaps to exploit in the oppositions defense. A line of backs is known as The
Backline

Fullback-Remains behind the backline, fielding any kicks that are deep into territory
while also playing a safety position to make the tackle in case of a breakout run from
the opposing team.

Wing-Positioned in the outside of the backline with number eleven on the left and
fourteen on the right, usually posses the most speed on the field.

Centre-There is an inside and outside centre positioned in the middle of the backline.
Good passers while under pressure with good running skills, creating space for other
backs with good tackling

Fly Half-Leader of the backlines positioning on the offense and defense, positioned
close to the breakdowns (scrums, rucks, mauls, and lineouts). They must be decisive
in their passes while communicating the whole time to the team. Strong kickers and

Scrum Half/ Half-Back-The link between the forwards and backs, removing the ball
from contact usually to the fly half but, are he best passers and can go across the field

Eight Man/ Number Eight-Binds between the locks at the back of the scrum also
can interact with scrum half and either run or hand it off. More times than not the
biggest players take this position.

Flankers- Tackling is the primary job of this position. The open side flanker binds in
the scrums to where the area where there is more area to cover in a defensive position
while the blindside flank has the side close to the sideline while binding loosely on
the outside in the second

Locks-Form the second row in scrums and push the front row. Usually the taller
players on the field, they get lifted in the air on the

Hooker-Middle of the front row in scrums, after scrum halfs roll the ball in between
the Packs they will try and use their feet to hook the ball back to win possession.
Throws the ball in usually on line outs. If there is a team who cannot field a hooker
there will be uncontested scrums with no drive from the packs and just

Props-Props up the hooker in scrums, on the outsides of the front row. Both push
back against opposition in scrummaging and in lineouts usually lifts up the
