The task involves reading a case study and identifying ways people can ensure a safe workplace through
participating in work health and safety management practices and following procedures for
emergency situations.
To undertake this task:You will be provided with the following resources:
A Risk Management Matrix and the Case Study Analysis Grid
In order to satisfactorily complete this task you will need to: Review your class notes explore process
and/or procedure models for evacuation. Complete the class task Hazard & risk analysis and evacuation
procedure for your training room, e.g.: kitchen.

The Task:

THE OLD SPENCER BUILDING
HUNGER BUSTER CAF / Mc CARTNEY PUBLISHING Co
The WHS committee for THE OLD SPENCER BUILDING recently conducted a safety audit of
the site and recorded a number of hazards in the workplace and that an Emergency
Evacuation Plan didnt exist for the building.
The building characteristics for The Old Spencer Building are as follows:

The building has 3 floors. The caf operates on the ground, while a Publisher and his
administration staff occupies the first and second floor.
Admin staff work for long periods at their desk doing data entry and word processing

44 people work in this building on the various levels.

There are two entrances at the front of the building.

Most of the exit lights above the doors are broken.

There are no external fire stairs for the building and electric lifts operate on all floors
and the basement. Internal non-pressurized stairs wells also give access to all floors
and the basement.

The basement area is shared by both businesses and is used for deliveries and storage
of food items, chemicals, paper goods etc. The only exit is from the basement is from
the rear entrance into a small access road. Frequently boxes are left in walkways
before being stored correctly.

PART A:
Using the RISK ASSESSMENT MATRIX Complete the table attached that requires you to:1 Outline in general terms the main features of Five (5) potential hazards from the
case study.
2 Reflecting on each of the Five (5) potential hazards recognize and name the level of
risk.
3 For each of the Five (5) potential hazards predict (forecast) the potential risks
(what could go wrong)
4 For EACH identified hazard suggest in general terms One Short term and One Long
term solution.
5 For ONE identified hazard suggest TWO (2) strategies that an employee (worker) could
do to manage (deal with) the risk& bring it to a reasonable level.
6 For ONE identified hazard suggest TWO (2) strategies that an employer (boss or
supervisor) could do to manage the risk & bring it to a reasonable level.
PART B:
Recommend an Emergency Evacuation Plan for THE OLD SPENCER BUILDING. This plan
can be presented in the form of a flow diagram and should include the following
features:The emergency plan should;
1 Show a logical (step by step) flow of the procedures (actions) for dealing with an
emergency evacuation
2 Provide at least TWO (2) warning signals

Explain how people should respond to an evacuation and evacuate (leave) the site
Identify at least TWO (2) positions and outline each of their responsibilities (Fire
wardens etc.)

OF INFORMATION that should be provided.

nearest fire exit.
4. Proceed in an orderly manner
to assembly point.
5. When out of immediate harm,
call emergency services for
assistance.
6. Remain at assembly point until all-clear is
given by a trained personnel.
