PHYSICS I PROBLEMS

VECTORS
Problems 2.1 and 2.2

1. Two forces P and Q are applied as shown at point A of a hook

support. Knowing that P = 75 N and Q = 125 N, determine the
magnitude and direction of their resultant using trigonometric
relations.
Sol.: R = 179 N & 75.1o

Problem 2.7

2. Two forces are applied as shown to a hook support.

Knowing that the magnitude of P is 35 N, determine
by trigonometry (a) the required angle if the resultant R of the two forces applied to the support is to be
horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R.
Sol.: (a) = 37.1o ; (b) R = 73.2 N
Problem 2.36

3. Knowing that the tension in cable BC is

725 N, determine the resultant of the three
forces exerted at point B of beam AB.
Sol.: R = 226 N . 62.3o

Problem 2.45

4. Two cables are tied together at C and are

loaded as shown. Knowing that P = 500 N
and = 60o , determine the tension in cables
AC and BC.
Sol.: TAC = 305 N, TBC = 514 N

Problems 2.125 and 2.126

5. Collars A and B are connected by a 25 cm-long

wire and can slide freely on frictionless rods. If
a 60 N force Q is applied to collar B as shown,
determine (a) the tension in the wire when x =
9 cm, (b) the corresponding magnitude of the
force P required to maintain the equilibrium of
the system.
Sol.: (a) T = 125 N; (b) P = 45 N
