AUDACITY QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

1. CREATE a PROJECT FOLDER: Go to Windows Start Up Computer Your Number


= Click the New Folder tab at the top or the Frame ONE time
= To RENAME your New Folder: Click ONCE on your New Folder Go to the ORGANIZE drop down at the top
of the page select RENAME *Name the New Folder: MusicIDproject
EDITING SONG CLIPS
2. Go to Windows Launch to Search & Open Audacity minimize audacity to allow partial screen access.
3. PICK UP MUSIC FROM FOLDER: Go to Windows Start Up Computer Open U-drive (STUDrive) HANDOUTS
folder Britto folder
*minimize folder so you can see Audacity and Britto folder on screen
OR Go to Windows Start Up Computer Your CD or Jump Drive
4. CLICK AND DRAG the music file into audacity
*Audacity will ask HOW to Import select MAKE A COPY (slower) option
5. Play Controls:
Pause Play

Stop Rewind Forward Record

6. Using the Play Controls, listen to your track and identify the 30 second
segment of the song you plan to use in your project. (Each tic is 10 seconds)

7. Click the approximate point on the music track at which you want the 30 second segment to begin. This will give you a
line across the track. Click PLAY to test your starting point and adjust as needed. Hover your mouse on the RIGHT side of
the line until a hand pointing LEFT appears. When the hand appears, CLICK AND DRAG toward the BEGINNING until you
reach start of the track music track and release your mouse click. The selected segment will be gray.
8. Select EDIT from Task Bar REMOVE AUDIO DELETE

9. Click the approximate point on the remaining music track at which you want the 30 second segment to end. This will
give you a line across the track. Hover your mouse until a hand appears and CLICK AND DRAG toward the END of the
song. Release your mouse click. The segment will be gray. REPEAT STEP 8.
10. TO SAVE YOUR CLIP Select FILE EXPORT COMPUTER YOUR NUMBER MusicIDproject
*change file name adding CLIP to the end of the file name (EX: NoWomanNoCryCLIP)
11. Repeat steps 1-10 to make each 30 second music clip.

VOICE RECORDING *YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED WRITTEN SCRIPT APPROVED BEFORE BEGINNING
10. Connect Headphones to computer: Red Jack into MIC portal and White Jack into HEADPHONE portal.

11. Go to Windows Launch to Search & Open Audacity (You MUST have headphones connected
before opening Audacity.) *At MICROPHONE icon slide INPUT VOLUME to approximately 0.8

WHITE

NOTE: Mic should be an inch or more from your mouth


Turn Mic away from your mouth when not recording.
12. Rehearse your Voice segments aloud. When you are ready to begin Click RECORD button in the Audacity Play
Controls (see #4 above) and begin speaking. Click STOP button to end the recording.
13. Edit out hmmmms and other mis-speaks *refer to steps 6-7 for removing audio*
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
14. Open Audacity minimize into partial screen window.
15. In a separate window, Go to Windows Start Up Computer Your Number MusicIDproject
16. Drag all project audio clips (music and voice recordings) into Audacity.
* HINT: Open tracks in the order in which you plan to use them
* HINT: Narrow tracks to better view all tracks.
Go to the BOTTOM track Hover to get Double Arrow
Click and Drag upward
17. Click and Drag from the BEGINNING of the track to be copied; release
mouse at the END of the track (selected Track should be Darker Gray)
18. Select EDIT COPY
19. Click the END of the track on which you wish to add the track
Select EDIT PASTE

20. Delete the unneeded Copied Track Click X

21. Repeat Steps 17-20 until all tracks are combined.


22. FINALIZE: Select FILE EXPORT COMPUTER YOUR NUMBER MusicIDproject
*change file name - LAST NAME-MusicIDproject (EX: CHANEY-MusicIDproject)
