CHAPTER 30

FOOD AND BEVERAGE

In the food and beverage industry, one can expect to find complex facilities for
production where both physical processes and chemical reactions take place.
Such complexes may include, for example, different classes of pipeline, storage
tanks for liquids and solids, grain silos and miscellaneous production
equipment.
Frequently, the raw materials for a production process are active chemicals and
it is then essential to take them into account when specifying a paint system.
Whenever the compatibility between a given paint formulation and a given
chemical needs to be checked, Jotun advisers can quickly give an answer.
The range of temperatures met in the industry is also very wide - from below 0C
to boiling - and this is in combination with a wide spread of operating pressures.
In such environments, expert advice is needed to choose the best available paint
system, bearing in mind total future costs, including maintenance.
An ideal paint system for such applications should be easy to apply and, perhaps
even more important, easy to clean. Cleanliness is of the utmost importance and,
for obvious reasons, relevant health and safety authorities will inspect the plant
from time to time. The chosen paint must be able to resist any abrasive action
of the cleaning process, and also any chemical action from cleaning agents.
When production lines themselves are made of stainless steel or aluminium,
thought must be given to any adjacent areas that require surface protection.

If it is likely that the paint or coating will come into direct contact with food or
beverage products, all relevant authorities will require to approve the paint
specification in advance of application. Regulations vary greatly from country
to country; a certificate of approval may be required, and it is important to check
in every individual case.
As with any production process, minimisation of down-time during maintenance
is essential. The chosen paint should be quick drying and give optimal strength
a short time after application. In addition, it must be waterborne or have a low
solvents content to eliminate odour. A careful choice of maintenance paint can
make a major contribution to minimising downtime and inconvenience.
