tribe but different clans. Even before Islam they kept away from
alcohol. Thus, this struck up a life-long friendship of both
honesty and integrity.
Abu Bakr was called Al-Siddeeq, an Arabic term for the truthful.
He was true himself, those around him and most importantly to
Allah subhanahu wa taala.
Amongst the gems that can be extracted from the friendship of
both amazing individuals:
1) Abu Bakrs love for Allah subhanahu wa taala and his
support for his beloved friend and call to Islam
Abu Bakr Al-Siddeeq was the first man to heed Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him and entered Islam without any
moments of hesitation. The sweetness of faith entered his heart
and the one known as Al-Siddeeq recognised the truth. He had
doubt with worshipping idols.
The Prophet peace be upon him said: Abu Bakr was the only
person who accepted Islam immediately, without suspicion
He was enthusiastic and wanted to bring many people to Islam.
At first Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him called the
people to Islam in secret as he knew that his message would
shock and dismay the Meccans who were deeply filled with
ignorance and were guardians of idolatry. When there were 38
Muslims, Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon him went to his
beloved friend Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and said
he wanted to proclaim the message in public.
Slaves were the ones who responded to Islam positively as they
found freedom, equality and mercy in Islam. They were taught
that all mankind were servants of Allah subhanahu wa taala
and He alone offers blessings, guidance and protection to all
regardless of ethnicity, caste, status and all. Abu Bakr AlSiddeeq was able to free many slaves due to his wealthy status
by buying them for the sake of Allah rather than for himself.
Amongst them were Bilal may Allah have mercy upon him who
2) Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon protected his friend.
He protected Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. I will
mention several occasions
A) Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him underwent physical
abuse. When Abu Bakr peace be upon him heard of this, he ran
and protected his friend and was mercilessly beaten. He cried
out Would you kill a man for saying that Allah is his Lord. The
Meccans then beaten Abu Bakr until blood went out as he
protected his friend courageously.
B) many Muslims emigrated to Abysinnia as for Abu Bakr may
Allah have mercy upon him, he did not want to leave Prophet
peace be upon him. He wanted to support and protect him in
time of need.
C) Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and Abu Bakr may
Allah have mercy upon him were hiding in cave called Thawr
from swordsmen of Mecca who wanted to kill them. He was
filled with fear not for himself but for his beloved friend Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him. Abu Bakr whispered to Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him Messenger of Allah, if they
look down towards their feet they will see us! Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him replied, Abu Bakr, what do you
think of two people with whom Allah is the third?. A Quranic
verse revealed:
If you help him (Muhammad) not (it does not matter), for God
did indeed help him when the disbelievers drove him out, the
second of two, when they were in the cave, and he (Prophet
Muhammad ) said to his companion (Abu Bakr),"Be not sad (or
afraid), surely God is with us. Then God sent down His Saknah
(calmness, tranquillity, peace, etc.) upon him, and
strengthened him with forces that you saw not, and made the
word of those who disbelieved the lowermost, while it was the
Word of God that became the uppermost, and God is AllMighty, All-Wise. (9:40)
Not only Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon him protected
his friend on general days but also during war. In battles of
Badr, Uhud, Khandaq(Trenches) where Abu Bakr was entrusted
with the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon hims safety which
emphasises the close friendship between the two.
3) Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy him had strong faith and
character
When Prophet Muhammad died, many were devastated.
Despite being overwhelmed with grief; He said Whoever
worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever
worshipped God, then God is Ever-living and shall never die.
He then recited the following verses.
(O Muhammad) Verily you will die, and they also will die.
(39:30)
Muhammad is no more than a Messenger, and indeed (many)
Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is
killed, will you then turn back on your heels (as disbelievers)?
And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he
do to God, and God will give reward to those who are grateful.
(3:144)
When Ali may Allah have mercy upon him was Caliph/Leader of
Muslims, he made a speech in which he epitomised Abu Bakr
