Tied Bonds (3rd Audio Lecture of Digging Jewels series)

Asalamu alaykum wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatu my dear

brothers and sisters in Islam, I pray you are all well. This is the
third audio lecture of the Digging Jewels Series titled Tied
bonds where I will focus on the concept of friendship in Islam
followed by a great example of friendship of our Beloved
Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and Abu Bakr AlSiddeeq may Allah have mercy upon him and what jewels can
be extracted from this particular friendship.
Every human is in need of friends to interact and socialise. To
share happy and sad moments with them.
For Muslims however, we need to choose the right friends and
company in order for us to preserve our Deen, stay upon the
Straight Path and strive for our ultimate vocation which is to
meet in Jannah if Allah wills especially if we are living in the
West where the society we live in can easily influence and can
have an impact in ones conduct, morals and behaviour if we
allow it. Our Beloved Prophet peace be upon him gave us
sincere advice regards to friendship:
A person is likely to follow the faith of his friend, so look
whom you befriend. [Abu Dawood and al-Tirmidhi]
Ali may Allah have mercy upon him said:
Mix with the noble people, you become one of them; and keep
away from evil people to protect yourself from their evils. [AlBukhari and Muslim]
So what do we mean by choosing the right friends? We need to
choose someone who is satisfied and is pleased with his Deen.
One who reminds you of Allah subhanahu wa taala. Reminds
you to pray. Gives sincere advice in relation to the Quran and
Sunnah.
Ibn Hazm may Allah have mercy upon him said:

Anyone who criticises you cares about your friendship.

Anyone who makes light of your faults cares nothing about
you. [Abu Dawood]

Alternatively, mixing with those who remove us from such

crucial duties and live it to the full will result in following the
same standards as they. This companionship will be the root of
sickness of the heart and losing ones Deen; which is why we
need to be cautious in whom we share and what in fact we
share.
This is not to say we run away from them. No. Instead we need
to be able to treat all with a gracious and just manner but a
sufficient distance is necessary. Make dua for yourself and them
for guidance and steadfastness. We are all in need of duas.
Only Allah guides whom He wills and misguides whom He wills.
Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad salla allahu alayhi wa salam
said:
The example of a good companion and a bad companion is
like that of the seller of musk, and the one who blows the
blacksmiths bellows.. So as for the seller of musk then either
he will grant you some, or you buy some from him, or at least
you enjoy a pleasant smell from him. As for the one who blows
the blacksmiths bellows then either he will burn your clothes
or you will get an offensive smell from him. [Al-Bukhari and
Muslim]
Imam Nawawi may Allah have mercy upon him said in relation
this last hadith that the Prophet peace be upon him described a
good companion as a seller of musk as they will have good
manners, piety and knowledge. He forbade us to sit with those
who commit sin of all types as well as innovators and so forth.
Both our beloved Prophet peace be upon him and Abu Bakr Al
Siddeeq had similar qualities such as honesty, kindness,
merciful and were great merchants. They were born to Quraish

tribe but different clans. Even before Islam they kept away from
alcohol. Thus, this struck up a life-long friendship of both
honesty and integrity.
Abu Bakr was called Al-Siddeeq, an Arabic term for the truthful.
He was true himself, those around him and most importantly to
Allah subhanahu wa taala.
Amongst the gems that can be extracted from the friendship of
both amazing individuals:
1) Abu Bakrs love for Allah subhanahu wa taala and his
support for his beloved friend and call to Islam
Abu Bakr Al-Siddeeq was the first man to heed Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him and entered Islam without any
moments of hesitation. The sweetness of faith entered his heart
and the one known as Al-Siddeeq recognised the truth. He had
doubt with worshipping idols.
The Prophet peace be upon him said: Abu Bakr was the only
person who accepted Islam immediately, without suspicion
He was enthusiastic and wanted to bring many people to Islam.
At first Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him called the
people to Islam in secret as he knew that his message would
shock and dismay the Meccans who were deeply filled with
ignorance and were guardians of idolatry. When there were 38
Muslims, Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon him went to his
beloved friend Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and said
he wanted to proclaim the message in public.
Slaves were the ones who responded to Islam positively as they
found freedom, equality and mercy in Islam. They were taught
that all mankind were servants of Allah subhanahu wa taala
and He alone offers blessings, guidance and protection to all
regardless of ethnicity, caste, status and all. Abu Bakr AlSiddeeq was able to free many slaves due to his wealthy status
by buying them for the sake of Allah rather than for himself.
Amongst them were Bilal may Allah have mercy upon him who

eventually becamse the first man to call for prayer (Adhaan).

Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification;
And have in their minds no favour from any one For which a
reward is expected in return, But only the desire to seek the
Countenance, Of their Lord, Most High; And soon they shall
attain complete satisfaction. (92:18-21)
Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon him even married his
daughter Aisha may Allah have mercy upon her to the Prophet
peace be upon him which increased their close relationship.

2) Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon protected his friend.
He protected Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. I will
mention several occasions
A) Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him underwent physical
abuse. When Abu Bakr peace be upon him heard of this, he ran
and protected his friend and was mercilessly beaten. He cried
out Would you kill a man for saying that Allah is his Lord. The
Meccans then beaten Abu Bakr until blood went out as he
protected his friend courageously.
B) many Muslims emigrated to Abysinnia as for Abu Bakr may
Allah have mercy upon him, he did not want to leave Prophet
peace be upon him. He wanted to support and protect him in
time of need.
C) Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and Abu Bakr may
Allah have mercy upon him were hiding in cave called Thawr
from swordsmen of Mecca who wanted to kill them. He was
filled with fear not for himself but for his beloved friend Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him. Abu Bakr whispered to Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him Messenger of Allah, if they
look down towards their feet they will see us! Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him replied, Abu Bakr, what do you
think of two people with whom Allah is the third?. A Quranic

verse revealed:
If you help him (Muhammad) not (it does not matter), for God
did indeed help him when the disbelievers drove him out, the
second of two, when they were in the cave, and he (Prophet
Muhammad ) said to his companion (Abu Bakr),"Be not sad (or
afraid), surely God is with us. Then God sent down His Saknah
(calmness, tranquillity, peace, etc.) upon him, and
strengthened him with forces that you saw not, and made the
word of those who disbelieved the lowermost, while it was the
Word of God that became the uppermost, and God is AllMighty, All-Wise. (9:40)
Not only Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon him protected
his friend on general days but also during war. In battles of
Badr, Uhud, Khandaq(Trenches) where Abu Bakr was entrusted
with the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon hims safety which
emphasises the close friendship between the two.
3) Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy him had strong faith and
character
When Prophet Muhammad died, many were devastated.
Despite being overwhelmed with grief; He said Whoever
worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever
worshipped God, then God is Ever-living and shall never die.
He then recited the following verses.
(O Muhammad) Verily you will die, and they also will die.
(39:30)
Muhammad is no more than a Messenger, and indeed (many)
Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is
killed, will you then turn back on your heels (as disbelievers)?
And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he
do to God, and God will give reward to those who are grateful.
(3:144)
When Ali may Allah have mercy upon him was Caliph/Leader of
Muslims, he made a speech in which he epitomised Abu Bakr

may Allah have mercy upon hims character where he asked

Who is the most courageous man in Islam? The audience
responded, You! Amir Al Mumineen (leader of the believers).
He responded It is true I have never faced an opponent and
lost, but I am not the most courageous. That honour belongs to
Abu Bakr.
To conclude, Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon him and
Prophet peace be upon him were united through all situations:
ease and hardship. Abu Bakr may Allah have mercy upon him
had a strong character who served for Islam and was ready to
use all his wealth and give up his life for the sake of Allah
subhanahu wa taala and protect Muhammad salla peace be
upon him. May Allah give us righteous companions like Abu
Bakr may Allah have mercy upon him who would help, support
and remind us about Islam. We ask Allah to seal make us of the
righteous ones and give us companions that will take us away
from His Wrath and lead us to His Pleasure and Paradise.
Ameen.
