By-Laws
ARTICLE I - NAME
The name of the board shall be the Hiram High School Business Department Advisory Board.
ARTICLE II - PURPOSE
The Advisory Board functions in an advisory capacity to the business teachers of Hiram High
School.
The Advisory Board makes recommendations regarding the expansion of programs, curriculum,
teacher training, and student learning. The Advisory Board also assists with student recruitment,
advocating within the community, and student job shadowing and internships. The Advisory Board
is an integral part of the experiential learning activities for all business students; bridging the gap
between the classroom, and the real world.
ARTICLE III - OBJECTIVES
The primary objective of the Advisory Board is to support the following goals and policies of the
local business program:
1. Preparing business students through course work and related experiential education for
success in higher education, their careers and in life.
2. Providing internship, job shadow, or employment opportunities for business students.
3. Providing training and professional development opportunities for teachers.
4. Providing and soliciting assistance from the business community in supporting the
business programs.
5. Enlisting the expertise of individuals in the industry to assist with development and
evaluation of curriculum, student selection, and scholarships.
6. Advocating on behalf of the business and career technology programs.
ARTICLE IV - ORGANIZATION
Meet quarterly to provide counsel, solve specific problems, develop curriculum and professional
development, and discuss other matters relating to the business programs.
Hold a full-Board strategic planning meeting during the month of August, which includes all
stakeholders from the business program (teachers, principal, district representation, business
partners, and education partners)
ARTICLE V MEMBERSHIP
1. The members of the Advisory Board shall be representatives of the industry, colleges and
universities, community leaders, and educators. Students and parents may also be
members. Ideally, business people should make up at least 51% of the Board members.
2. Members of the Advisory Board shall receive no compensation for their services as
Advisory Board members.
3. Any member may resign from the Advisory Board by giving written notice to the
Chairperson. The resignation will be effective immediately upon receipt of such notice.

ARTICLE VI - RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Strengthen public relations and publicity relative to the program.
2. Assist in evaluating the rigor, relevance, and effectiveness of the curriculum to meet the
needs of the industry, readiness for college and preparation for life.
3. Provide professional development activities for business teachers.
4. Participate in student education programs including guest speaking, guest teaching,
partnership projects, internships, employment, and co-curricular organization
participation.
ARTICLE VII - MEETINGS
Section 1 Quorum
A simple majority of the Advisory Board members shall constitute a quorum for conducting
Advisory Board business.
Section 2 Voting
Each active member of the Advisory Board shall be entitled to vote on any issue presented to the
Advisory Board. A duly qualified alternate in attendance at a meeting may vote on behalf of a
member, but no proxy votes allowed.
Section 3 Minutes
The Chairperson will designate a person to record and distribute the minutes to all Advisory Board
members. This is typically the Secretary. The Advisory Board coordinating teacher will assist the
Chairperson in coordinating the meetings and developing the agenda.
ARTICLE VIII - OFFICERS
Section 1 Chairperson
The Advisory Board shall consist of one Chairperson or two Co-Chairpersons. The members of
the Advisory Board shall elect the Chairperson for a term of one year.
Section 2 Vice-Chairperson (or Co-Chairperson)
The Advisory Board shall consist of one Vice- or Co-Chairperson. The members of the Advisory
Board shall elect the Vice- or Co- Chairperson every two years.
Section 3 Other Officers
The majority of the Advisory Board members shall decide other officer positions such as Secretary.
The Secretary shall keep, record, and disseminate the minutes of the Advisory Board meetings.
The Secretary shall also keep a current list of Advisory Board members names, company names,
email and mailing addresses and other contact information.
ARTICLE IX - AMENDMENTS
These by-laws may be altered, amended, or repealed. New by-laws may be adopted by a majority
vote of the Advisory Board at any regular meeting or special meeting.

Business Department Mission Statement


In support of the Paulding County vision, the mission of the Hiram High School Business Department is
committed to providing relevant and real-life learning experiences to ensure that students acquire the
knowledge and skill in business and computer technology necessary to prepare them for post-secondary
education and entry into the workplace. The aim of our academic and applied learning program is to
produce graduates and future leaders who understand business and its social responsibilities, work
productively in a high-technology, innovative, and culturally diverse society, and maintain high ethical
standards.

Short-Term Goals

Provide job shadowing and mentoring opportunities

Develop methods of promoting Business Education and Information Technology pathways to


rising eighth grade students and the larger community

Recommend course pathways relevant to community business human resource needs

Provide job shadowing and externship opportunities to business teachers to foster their
knowledge of industry standards and practices

Assist in preparing students for FBLA Competition

Sponsor field trips and contribute to collateral material

Long-Term Goals

Provide professional expertise to support curriculum by reviewing and contributing to material


utilized in the business classroom

Improve the relationship between community and education by advocating on behalf of the
business department in business and social activities throughout the community

Assist in the recruitment of additional Advisory Board members by sponsoring and presenting at
a variety of venues and events (Chamber meetings, professional association meetings, school
site meetings (recruitment breakfasts, luncheons, etc.)

Provide industry familiarization tours for teachers and career exploration tours for students.
