    The majority of expatriate Bangladeshis do not make any effort to teach mother tongue to their children. As a result, they can neither speak Bengali, nor write and read their native language. In this context, I recall an amusing episode. While I was in Austin a few years ago, I rang up one of my expatriate friends in connection with some important matter. He was not at home. The phone was received by his youngest daughter.

    When will our country have such young men?

    (Kusum Kumari Das, 1882-1948)

    When will our country turn out

    Such young men without doubt?

    Who will not be talking in futility

    But show his deeds with humility.

    Who would display courage without swerving

    With a smile in his lips and valor at heart.

    To turn into a real man and be real smart.

    Become courageous when exposed to danger?

    And march and leap forward without fear.

    Do they not have strength,

    Blood, flesh and life at length?

    Try to be a like to be a fruit tree

    If you can, try to be like a fruit tree

    Distributing good things to all free.

    If you cant, keep yourself on one side

    Not involving yourself in the fight.

    Dont be afraid to dive in the water

    If a diver is afraid to dive in the water

    He can never collect pearls no matter

    All his efforts will go in vain,

    If he cant dive ignoring pain.

    A wise man among the illiterate

    If there is a wise man among the illiterate,

    The illiterate will not give him due respect.

    How would a blind man appreciate beauty?

    Just as an infidel cannot understand the Qurans glory
