NEED FOR COMMUNITY PSYCHIARTY SERVICES • To break the social discrimination syndrome. • Institutionalized psychiatric services are more expensive. • Insufficient man power. EXTEND OF PROBLEM IN INDIA • POPULATION 1.7 Billion • PREVALENCE OF PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER 62/1000 population • SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESS Point Prevalence – 10-20%/1000 population. Incidence - 35/100,000 population. • NUROSIS AND PSYCHOSOMATIC DISORDRES Point prevalence – 4-5% • PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS IN CHILDREN Point prevalence - 2-3% • MENTAL RETARDATION Point prevalence - 20 million children • PSYCHIATRIC OPD ATTENDANCE IN Govt. hospital- 6.63 million/yr Private hospital- 4.83 million/yr Total OPD attendance – 8.49 million/yr EXISTING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IN INDIA • No. of Government hospital in India – 40

• Psychiatric beds in India - 26,000
