In my second authentic assessment, I had 45 minutes to complete the lesson, compared

to my usual 15 scheduled minutes. Coincidentally, this day was also Grandparents Day, which
worked in my advantage. I broke the 25 students up into 5 groups, with 5 students in each
group. I placed the students in each group with purpose, so that each group had at least 2
grandparents present, and a mixture of high and low students. The purpose of the task was to
use the preprinted research materials with a variety of facts and information about
Pennsylvania and people native to Pennsylvania, and create a poster to convince the audience
that Pennsylvania is the best state ever. We all pretended that we were travel agents and
wanted to convince our customers to travel to Pennsylvania, using the key facts, exciting palces
and important people to convince them. Each student was supposed to have a specific task,
choosing one of the following:

Pennsylvania attractions and places to visit

Important historical facts of Pennsylvania
Interesting facts about Pennsylvania
Important people of Pennsylvania
State picture, state flag, maps and important cities of Pennsylvania

I included an instruction sheet for each group and a packet with a variety of information
that they could use and cut apart to put onto their poster. I used the following rubric to grade
each student:

Group Number:
Role for poster:

In total, the students did very well on this project. In the 45 minutes they had to
complete the assignment, the grandparents and my cooperating teacher and I kept them on
task and many of the posters ended up turning out rather creatively. The majority of the
students did a poster and reported it just simply on the topic of Pennsylvania, but some took
the extra initiative and tried to convince the audience that Pennsylvania was the best place to
live.
