Rev. 2013

Teacher Candidate: Liz and Haley

Lesson # ______
Subject/Grade: Science/ Second
Date and Time of Lesson: 11/18/14 11:30
Learning Objective: (must support unit objectives identified in TWS 3)

After watching the video (A Book of Seasons), the students will be able to construct a flip book to
describe the seasonal weather patterns with 100 percent accuracy.

Alignment with Standards: (must support unit standards identified in TWS 3)

2.E.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the daily and seasonal weather
patterns
Developmental Appropriateness and Cross-curricular connections: (should
parallel information in TWS Section 3)

In terms of social development the students will be able to cooperate with each other
while sharing materials and their completed flip books. In terms of cognitive
development, the students will be able to cooperate with each other while at their desks
working on their flip books by using the information learned from the video. Emotional
development is addressed through expression of creativity. Physical development is
addressed when the students get up to receive their supplies from the teacher, and
when they are placed in groups to share. Prerequisite knowledge comes from the video
watched and will be gathered through questions before the video plays. ELA will be
addressed through the flip books, students will be expected to use correct grammar,
spelling, and sentence structure. The fine arts are addressed by the students drawing
out the weather patterns. Physical Education is addressed by allowing the students to
move when they are getting supplies and when they are getting in their groups.
Assessment(s) of the Objectives: (must support unit assessments identified in TWS 3)
What assessment(s) will you use to determine student learning (pre, during, post)? Each
objective should be aligned with an assessment.
Lesson Objective(s)

Assessment(s) of the
Objective(s)

After watching the

video (A Book of
Seasons), the students
will be able to construct
a flip book to describe
the seasonal weather
patterns with 100
percent accuracy.

For the pre assessment,

we will ask questions:
how many seasons do
we have throughout the
year and can you explain
the weather during those
seasons?
For during assessment,
we will stop the video
after every season and
have the students retell
what the weather
patterns were like during
the specific seasons.
For the post assessment,
students will create a flip
book and will submit it
for a grade and allow the
teacher to check for
accuracy.

Use of Formative
Assessment
(TWS section 7)
After the flip books
are graded and
analyzed, the flip
books will be
returned to the
students and they
will be allowed to
make corrections if
needed. If there is
still confusion we will
conference with that
specific student.

Accommodations: (should parallel information in TWS 3 and show use of TWS 1 data)

For those learners that are slow paced, we will give them a copy of the notes from the lecture.
For those students that finish early, we will ask them to review their work and then share with
others that are finished. We will use the students IEPs to ensure all needs are fulfilled. For any
physical disabilities we will allow for enough room around the room. If we need a sound amplifier
we will grab one from the resource room, for those that are hearing impaired. For those that are
visually impaired we will allow them to use their own personal iPad for them to hold closer and
farther away.

Materials: Internet access to watch the video from YouTube, Paper, Pencils, Markers, Crayons,
Glue, Craft Supplies for the Seasons, a sound amplifier, iPads if needed.

Procedures:

Before the lesson begins, we will gather all of the supplies needed to make the flip books (all of
the crafting supplies) and they will be separated into bins so the students can get them when
they get to that point. They will also be able to place them back in the appropriate bins.
When the students are ready (they are behaving appropriately), they will be called to the carpet
to watch the video (A Book of Seasons).
They will be asked a series of questions: How many seasons do we have? Can you explain the
weather during those times? Can you make any connections or tell a story?
While the students answer, the teacher will be jotting down notes of which students have the
appropriate knowledge and which do not. If there are a few students that lack background
knowledge the teacher will then scaffold the students answers to help them gain the
appropriate knowledge.
Once students are on the same level, the teacher will begin the video this will address both
auditory and visual learners. During the video the students will be required to pay attention and
can take notes if needed.
The teacher will also stop the video after every student, and ask them to reiterate what the
weather seasons were. If there seems to be a student that was not paying attention then she will
ask those student(s) first. If there is a student that is shy and is not comfortable with speaking in
front of the class, the teacher will allow them to return to their seat and then go to those
students individually to ensure comprehension.
Once the video is done the students will be called by groups to go back to their seats, they will
be allowed a few minutes to brainstorm. Once they feel like they are ready they will go get the
materials from the appropriate bins and begin to work on their flip books.
The teacher will use the beehive technique and will walk around the room and make sure the
students are on the correct path. By allowing the students to make their own flip book, this will
address kinesthetic learners.
For the students that finish early, they will be asked to recheck over their booklet and then will
be placed into groups to share what they learned. The students will be motivated to do the best
work they can do since they will be sharing with their peers.
To close the lesson, the teacher will collect their flip books and use to grade, this will allow the
teacher to check for the 100% accuracy as stated in the objective.

Activity Analysis: (must support TWS 3 and show use of TWS 1 data)

The first activity will be watching the video A Book of Seasons from YouTube; this activity will
allow students to get the bulk of their information, while the teacher scaffolds probing questions
to ensure they are on the right track. The activity supports the objective because it discusses the
weather pattern during the seasons. It addresses the needs of visual and auditory learners; it
also allows the students a break from the normal teaching strategy. We will use the smart board
and the computer to play the video.
The second activity will be creating the flip books; the flip books will be a way to make sure the
students comprehend the material with 100 % accuracy. The teacher will be grading them and it

will allow her to make sure her students understand the standard. The making of the books
addresses the needs of kinesthetic learners and it allows the students to move around and
relieve energy. Technology will be used when the students are creating their books, they will
need scissors, and they may need pictures of the seasons printed out.
