Background
Bernoullis principle is a concept very used in fluid mechanics that basically
sets that when speed of a fluid increases, pressure decreases for nonviscous fluids (inviscid). Bernoullis principle leads to an equation called,
Bernoullis equation :

Bernoullis eq. for incompressible flows (from Wikipedia)

This equation is derived from Newtons second law for fluids in motion. As
we can observe,t he principle idea is that energy is conserved in a fluid in
motion.
In this lab we are going to study the typical experiment of putting some
mentos in soda (Diet coke in this case). The basic idea of this experiment is
that the pores in mentoss surface activate soda CO 2 , resulting in a big
expulsion of foams. The release of CO2 produces some energy due to the
pressure force of the soda bottle. This energy is transformed to kinetic
energy causing the expulsion of the soda. And at the top height the energy
is transformed into potential energy because of gravity.

Methods
An student put mentos in the bottle, other students recorded the
experiment in video to be able to analyze it after and with a Werner leader
we measured experimentally the height of the geyser.

Figure 1: Maximun height of

the geyser during reaction.

Results
We obtained a height of 1.85

0.127 m . Plus the density of diet coke is

997 kg/m3, atmospheric pressure is 101.35kPa and the bottle measured

0.30m. (It was a 2L bottle) This and gravity constant are basically the data
we need to compute pressure and velocity.

Discussion
With this data we can find the pressure inside the bottle. This pressure is
equal to:
P

coke

= 119.25

1.40 kPa

Now using Bernoullis equation we are able to compute the velocity we are
looking for. Lets call it Vobottle.
Vobottle = 5.58m/s
