Hello and welcome to Math 10-3! This course will be an exciting chance for us to
explore some important concepts, applications, and trends in math and I hope that
by the end of the semester, you will have found a deeper understanding of how
math plays a role in the real world and workforce. I also hope that we will enjoy
getting to know each other and deepening our learning. I think it is going to be an
awesome semester and I am truly looking forward to seeing what new things we
uncover
REMIND APP:
One way I can help remind you about assignments, quizzes, and tests is to sign up
for the Remind App on your phones. Just text the code @mrsbmath10 to 587-4093006 to sign up!

Course Goals:
The main goals of this course are to prepare students to:

Use math confidently to solve problems

Communicate and reason mathematically
Appreciate and value math
Make connections between math and its applications
Commit themselves to lifelong learning
Become mathematically literate adults, using math to contribute to society

As you can see, this course is about much more than just answering math
questions! We are going to use many real life situations to learn how math applies
to our lives and society so that we can be successful as adults.

Expectations: In order to master concepts, extra practice is continually required.

Students are required to complete all assignments, whether in attendance or not.
Students will be given sufficient time to complete assignments in class (as much as
possible), however, out of class study time is essential if students are to do their
best in this course. I have high expectations of all my students and believe that
participation in class activities, attending class, monitoring your own learning, and
seeking outside help when needed are keys to success in Math 10-3.
PLEASE BRING the following to each class: Pencil, paper, calculator (you may use
your phone as a calculator for some scenarios, but not for tests or quizzes).

Examination Rules: Students are responsible to bring all examination materials

to class before the exam. Sharing of materials during an exam is not allowed. Any
cheating during an exam or quiz will not be tolerated. A deferred exam will be given
only when exceptional circumstances prevent the student from writing at the
scheduled time. Arrangements made within a reasonable time are required.

Assessment: Each unit mark will be determined by:

Assignments, Projects, and
Quizzes
Unit Tests

40%
60%

Your final mark will be determined by the following:

Unit 1
Unit 2
Unit 3
Unit 4
Final Exam

25%
25%
20%
10%
20%

The majority of your grade will be determined by the final exam and unit tests.
Additionally, each unit will have weekly quizzes as well as assignments and projects
that will give you an alternative way to demonstrate your learning and development
of various skills. Criteria and grading procedures for these projects will always be
made known to you and you should expect that self- and/or peer-assessments will
be involved in most assignments. Marks are updated in PowerSchool once a week,
usually occurring on a weekend. If an assignment has not been handed in, a zero
will be placed in PowerSchool as a placeholder until the assignment has been
completed. If you ever have any questions about how you are graded, please ask!
Homework and small in class assignments will be used for the purpose of improving
learning through descriptive feedback and reflection. Although not everything that
is assigned will count towards your final grade, all assignments MUST be completed

to a sufficient quality. Therefore, you are expected to complete assignments on time

and properly.
If you are excused from a class you will also be excused from any labs or
quizzes during that lesson; however, all assignments must be completed
and handed in. Late assignments will be accepted upon discussion with
the teacher and only if that assignment has not already been handed back
to the rest of the class. If it has, the student must arrange to complete the
assignment during a focus block in my class.

CURRICULAR OBJECTIVES OF MATHEMATICS 10-3

Unit 1: Measurement
Students will:
Develop spatial sense through direct and indirect measurement.
Develop algebraic reasoning.
Specific Outcomes:
o

Demonstrate an understanding of the Systme International (SI) by:

describing the relationships of the units for length, area, volume,
capacity, mass and temperature
applying strategies to convert SI units to imperial units.

Demonstrate an understanding of the imperial system by:

describing the relationships of the units for length, area, volume,
capacity, mass and temperature
comparing the American and British imperial units for capacity
applying strategies to convert imperial units to SI units.

Solve and verify problems that involve SI and imperial linear measurements,
including decimal and fractional measurements.

Solve problems that involve SI and imperial area measurements of regular,

composite and irregular 2-D shapes and 3-D objects, including decimal and
fractional measurements, and verify the solutions.

Solve problems that require the manipulation and application of formulas

related to perimeter and area.

Unit 2: Money
Students will:
Develop number sense and critical thinking skills.
Develop algebraic reasoning.
Specific Outcomes:
o

Solve problems that involve unit pricing and currency exchange, using
