Objective:

Studentswilllearntheproperarticulationandapplicationofproperbow
techniques.Studentswilllearnthemeaninganddifferencebetweenlegato,staccato,and
spiccato.

Supplies:
Metronome,bow,instrument,sheetmusic,paper,andpencils.

Procedure:
TeacherwilldemonstrateeacharticulationontheGstring,at80bpmonthe
metronomeusingquarternotesandaskstudentstowritethedifferencestheyheardbetween
eacharticulation.Thenstudentswillwritewhattheysawtherightbowhanddoing.Classwill
havediscussiononwhattheyobservedandwhichonetheylikedthemost.Teacherwill
demonstrate
legato
againontheGstringat80bpmwithquarternotesandtellstudentsto
replicatethetechnique.Teacherwillexplainthatlegatostylesmooth,likeyourepullingyour
bowthroughapoolofjello.Whilethestudentstryagaintheteacherwillgoaroundcritiquing.
Teacherwillthendemonstrate
staccato
ontheGstringat80bmpusingquarternotesand
explainthatthebowmovementisntsmoothlikelegato,itisseparatedanddetached.
Studentswillreplicate.Teacherwillcritiquestudentsthathavetroublereplicatingthe
technique.Nowtheteacherwilldemonstratehowtodo
spiccato
on80bpmwithquarternotes
andexplainthatitrequiresseparatingofthenoteslikewithstaccatobutwithbouncingnear
themiddlebalancepointofthebow.Studentswillreplicateandtheteacherwillgoaroundand
critiquestudents.

Evaluation:
Teacherwilltaketurnsassessingeachsectiononthethreearticulations.After
thefirstevaluation,tellbassesandcellostoplaylegato,violinstoplaystaccato,andviolasto
playspiccatoalltogether.Sectionswilltaketurnsplayingthedifferentarticulationstogether.
