TITLE:

Design of an economical and environment friendly split air

conditioner

INTRODUCTION:
Air conditioning has become a necessity in todays World. But, due to the
depleting fossil fuel reserves and their increasing requirement, the operating cost
of air conditioning systems is escalating. Consequently, very few people today
can afford it making it a luxury. Hence, in this project we are trying to make the
split air conditioning system more economical. The copper tubes used in
condensers and evaporators are, generally, fabricated with an inner diameter of
7mm. We aim to reduce the diameter of these copper tubes without depreciating
the performance by using inner grooved tubes.
The most widely used refrigerant R22 contains chloro-fluoro-carbons (cfc) which
causes ozone depletion. We plan to use R410a as a substitute to it due to its
ozone friendly nature and almost azeotropic property.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To reduce energy consumption and, hence, the strain on conventional
energy resources.
2. To increase the efficiency of air conditioner to make it economical for
general purpose use.
3. To use an environment friendly (non-cfc) refrigerant to contribute to the
conservation of ozone layer.
LITERATURE REVIEW:
1. HVAC Systems Design Handbook by Roger W. Haines, Michael E. Myers
2. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning by R. S. Khurmi and J. K. Gupta

WORK METHODOLOGY:
1. Studying the basics of air conditioning system (Refrigeration cycle)
2. Understanding the working and construction of a conventional split air
conditioner
3. Selection of refrigerant based on its properties
4. Selection of compressor according to the refrigerant specifications
5. Design calculations of heat transfer and pressure drop
6. Determination of EER and other ratings

7. Comparison of our design with designs of same capacity available in the

market

LIMITATIONS:
1. Limited availability of R410a refrigerant in India in near future
2. Need for precision equipment during manufacturing
3. High pressure operation makes implementation of severe safety measures
crucial

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
An energy efficient, economical and environment friendly Split Air Conditioner
