The media has replaced

family, society and religion

as the main source of
collective identity
You need to be able to discuss
the ideological agency theory
in regards to media

Ideological Agencies
Education System
Church
Family
Mass media and Popular Culture
People are brainwashed or conditioned
into thinking and behaving in a certain
way

Education
Socialises each generation into
societys values, norms, attitudes
etc, particularly the belief that work
is a highly valued activity.
It encourages social conformity by
stressing adherence to formal rules
School makes you behave and obey
rules

Education
Like all ideological agencies schools
convey the idea that the social group
is more important than the individual

Marxism
Marxists argue that ideological
agencies like education benefits a
capitalist elite by making us obey rules
which support the capitalist society.
Marxists argue that by maintaining
power over children, teachers are
training children to become a
subservient and docile workforce who
will not challenge the power of

Marxism
Marxists argue that schools transmit
an ideology which states that
capitalism is right and resonable.
Controlling people through influence is
better than controlling them by force.

Ideological Agencies
According to Marxist theory the Family
along with the Church will act as
agencies supporting the ruling elite.
You learn your behaviour from family
who are already apart of the capitalist
society
You learn your behaviour from your
church who are already apart of the
capitalist society

Media
As media becomes more and more
prevalent within society, marxist
theory suggests that it has now
replaced family, society and religion as
the main source of collective identity.

Representation
By continually being exposed to
images and narratives we become
brainwashed into thinking it is normal.
" The more time people spend 'living'
in the television world, the more likely
they are to believe social reality
portrayed on television
Stanley Cohen

The media has replaced family, society and religion as the main
source of collective identity Discuss
Explain your understanding of Ideological Agencies discuss how family,
education, etchas formed a collective identity groups in society etc
Althusser Ideological Agencies Ideology is profoundly unconscious
Cultivation Theory You experience so much media 24/7 that you begin to
absorb that world as reality
Durkhiem Society produces the individuals sense of identity
Marxist Theory Its all about capitalism and supporting the ruling elite
Capitalism How is being supported by Media

The media has replaced family, society and religion as the main
source of collective identity Discuss
In order to discuss whether the media has replaced family, society and religion
as the main source of collective identity its important to understand what is
meant by a collective identity and how it is formed. Durkheim suggests that the
cult of the individual is the product of society itself. Meaning that the fabric of
society such as family, education, and religion create a sense of belonging to a
group. With todays media saturation it is possible to discuss film and television
as replacing these ideological agencies in regards to the representation of
British Women.

According to Althusser Ideology has very little to do with conscience it is

profoundly unconscious and this theory can be discussed when evaluating
whether the media has replaced family, society and religion as the main source
of collective identity. When discussing the representation of British Women
within Film and TV we can see how Althussers suggestion that ideological
agencies create a sense of identity can be evaluated within Film and Television

The media has replaced family, society and religion as the main
source of collective identity Discuss

A Brief Encounter 1945 (strong family units, divorce rate low, church attendance high,
education system more rigid film was a source of collective identity but had not replaced it)
A Kind of Loving (1962) (family breakdown, divorce rate high, church attendance beginning to
dwindle, education system reformed (grammar v comprehensive) - film and television
beginning to become a wide source of collective identity wider amount of stereotypes.
Contemporary Media
(family breakdown, divorce rate high, multiculturalism, church attendance low and fragmented,
education system lacks rigidity, saturation of film and television creating a powerful source of
collective identity.
Tamara Drewe (2010) Supporting middle class ideology and consumer power
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) Supporting middle class ideology and consumer power
Made in Dagenham (2012) Supporting middle class ideology and consumer power
Scott and Bailey ITV Construction of modern British women - work orientated = consumer
power
The Fall (BBC2) Construction of modern british women work orientated = consumer power
ETC ETC

You need to explain

What is meant by collective identity
What is meant by ideological agencies
How ABE is a source of collective identity for British Women
How AKoL marks the replacement of the family, religion etc.
How contemporary film and television has now replaced the other
ideological agencies because we consume so much of it
The difference between the collective identity in regards to film and
television
Film = supports capitalism by the aspirations of the middle class
TV = supports capitalism by the consumer power of the working British
woman
When we see the working classes in films, its nearly always juxtaposed
with the middle class.
