ISANTI COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY (ICHS)


EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION
The Isanti County Historical Society Executive Director is responsible for managing the day to
day operations of the Isanti County Historical Society. The Executive Director works closely
with the ICHS Board of Directors, and is responsible for charting and maintaining the overall
strategic direction of the organization.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Supervises staff and volunteers. Exercises discretionary judgment and initiative within
specific and broad guidelines established by the ICHS Board of Directors and the Minnesota
Historical Society.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following are illustrative only and are not intended to be all-inclusive or restrictive:
Assists the Board of Directors to develop strategic plan and ensures that the plan is
updated periodically. Responsible for implementation of strategic plan.
Develops and oversees all public programs of the Isanti County Historical Society.
Works with Trustees and Volunteers, organizes lectures and tours related to the
history of Isanti County.
Initiates and nurtures ideas for new publications about the history of Isanti County.
Develops exhibits of historical interest for the museums public galleries and ensures
that all exhibits provide exceptional public access on site and on line.
Works with the Curator of Collections and with ICHS Volunteers to ensure that the
collections and archives of the ICHS are properly stored and organized.
Keeps the Collections Management Policy current and institutes other policies that
ensure adherence to the highest standards.
Manages and monitors backups of PastPerfect Museum Software and RDC off-site
backups.
Maintains and updates records of members and member donations.
Explores and implements creative approaches to engage potential members.
Uses ICHS newsletters, the ICHS website and other social media to provide information
about ICHS programs, events, and news.

Works with webmaster to organize, develop and update website.
Develops and maintains relationships with representatives of Isanti County, elected
officials and local nonprofit organizations.
Seeks grants from public and private sources to support programs and oversee
progress.
Works with the ICHS Development Committee to provide leadership and support for
fundraising events.
Works with ICHS Treasurer to develop annual budget; ensures all donations and other
income items are logged into accounting software.
Ensures all credit card and PayPal transactions are processed.
Responsible to ensure cleaning and necessary maintenance for the ICHS building and
other historical buildings.
Assists ICHS Board President in developing the agenda for Board meetings, attends
Board meetings, provides reports and distributes information to the Board.
Identifies seminars and meetings that would be useful for the Curator of Collections,
Volunteers, Board of Directors and/or the Executive Director to attend.
Hires additional staff as finances allow. Keeps up-to-date on employment laws.
May conduct yearly performance reviews of staff.
Develops job descriptions and requirements as needed for specific volunteer positions.
Recruits to fill specific volunteer positions; trains and supervises volunteers.
Develops volunteer handbook and code of conduct.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)


Demonstrated understanding of nonprofit management and organizational finance.
Ability to develop, implement and evaluate long-range plans.
Demonstrated knowledge of grant writing and granting organizations.
Ability to work closely and effectively with the Board of Directors, public and private
sector individuals, officials and organizations.

KSAs (continued)
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including public speaking.
Ability to supervise and manage professional, volunteer and administrative staff.
Ability to use social media and digital outlets for communication.
Ability to use office software (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and familiarity with
accounting software.
Demonstrated ability to create newsletters, posters, tickets, brochures and other
collateral.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor degree preferred. Administrative experience, strong technology skills, and
computer experience required. Educational background or experience with museums,
historical societies, libraries or archives, event planning and accounting are assets.
