Ser y los adjetivos en espaol ~ objetivos

To learn and practice with the forms of the verb ser, to be
To learn, understand and practice different adjective forms (masculine and
feminine)
Put your knowledge to the test!

El verbo ser
SER is the infinitive (remember our lesson on infinitives? Verbs that begin to do
something?) for the English to be.
It is VERY helpful in descriptions (ie: John is tall) as well as identifying things
(Zach is my cat). Here we will see ser used to describe people, friends and family.
SER conjugations. A conjugation is when you change the verb from its infinitive so
that it matches its person, for example we dont say I to be but I am.
yo soy (I am)

nosotros somos (we are)

t eres (you are)

vosotros sois (you all are)

l es (he is) ellos son (they are)

ella es (she is) ellas son (they-f are)
usted es (you are)

ustedes son (you all are)

El verbo ser (continuado)

Do you see how ser changed from its to be to various forms of the verb (am,
is are)? We do that in English and of course they do that in Spanish too!
Do you remember seeing & hearing that in the videohistoria and in A Primera
Vista?
How would you fill in the blanks here?
Elena ____ artstica, pero tambin ____ perfeccionista
Toms ___ reservado y muy trabajador
T ___ atrevido y atltico!
Y yo ____ ordenada y estudiosa

Los adjetivos y el gnero

Did you notice that sometimes the adjectives ended in o and sometimes in a?
Why do you think that is? What do you remember from the introductory chapter
that deals with a term called gender?
Gender is the masculine or feminine representation of ANY noun in Spanish,
even things that arent alive.
Adjectives when used to describe nouns must match that nouns gender. Here
are a couple of examples to consider:
El chico simptico
La chica simptica
What happened to our word simpatico??

OK: so adjectives (most, anyway) have this pretty cool flexibility. They can
change to match their noun in both gender (masculine/feminine) and number
(if the noun theyre playing with is singular or plural). Look.

ordenado
simptico
atltico
estudioso

ordenados
simpticos
atlticos
estudiosos

ordenada

atltica
estudiosa

El amigo

La chica

Los

ordenadas

Theres just one.more.detail ;-) and this is something you will have to get used
to in Spanish there always seems to be one exception to the rule.
There WILL be adjectives that do NOT change for gender, and you will simply
have to study those lo siento (Im sorry!)
Typically adjectives that end in the letter e and/or consonants do not change
for gender (m/f). But, good news ALL adjectives change for NUMBER (phew :)
Ejemplos:
Interesante, popular, emocionante, inteligente, verde, paciente
Now, dont you really wish you were at the beach? Ah, ojal.. (if only!)
