The use of Green in the Great Gatsby
The famous author Scott Fitzgerald uses much figurative language in
his writing to represent deeper connections. In the great Gatsby for example,
the color green is used to symbolize hope versus the reality of struggle of the
American Dream.
At the beginning of the book, Gatsby held so many parties for
everyone in town but Daisy never attended. Later in the book, Gatsby
discovered that nick knew daisy and that daisy was his neighbor. Gatsbys
dream began; his hopes went up and planned to see Daisy again. Daisy
showed up at Gatsbys house and they then started talking to each other
about the old days. The main idea of this book is about Gatsbys American
dream and going back to his old love.
Buying a house near the bay was one of Gatsbys goals and idea to be
near daisy. Everything Gatsby tried to do was to bring back daisy and reunite
his love forever. He was willing to do anything to see daisy and be with her
again. The love was so strong to the point that there was nothing impossible
to be done to see her face again. Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy

would be just across the bay.(pg.78). The theme of this book is hope, the
hope of seeing daisy and reuniting the love of two young lovers that couldnt
be together because of wealth. Days passed by and love finally reunites.
Daisy sees Gatsby and they talk about old days. However Gatsby discovers
that Daisy is somewhat a gold digger. Their voice is full of
money.(pg.120).Everything appears to be about wealth to daisy. Gatsby
worked hard and worked in illegal jobs to manage and have a wealthy life.
Furthermore, Gatsby did everything to show Daisy that he was wealthy
enough for her and her family. Daisy didnt seem too interested in Gatsby,
but very interested in his money.
Sometimes reality is wrong and dreams are real is what appeared to
Gatsby. Gatsby wanted to be wealthy to show Daisy that he was worth to be
with but the reality is a portion different. The hope was always given to
Gatsby by Daisy; he was given the hope that he still had a chance with her
all over again. Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that
year by year recedes before us.(pg.180). Gatsby believed in the green light
as if it was the key to a happy ending, however things changed towards the
end of his life. He was killed and no one seemed to care about him as well as
Daisy. Of course Im not likely to see anybody. (Pg.169). Nick was speaking
of Gatsbys funeral and mentioned how no one was going to attended the
funeral. Gatsby held so many parties and numerous of people showed up as
Daisy herself as well towards the end. When Gatsby died his dream faded
and was basically washed away. Daisy didnt show to Gatsbys funeral, she

was his only dream and love but she moved away and never came to his
funeral. The reality of the American Dream changed towards the end of the
book; it showed how love and wealth didnt have a good combination
together. Sometimes poor love is more successful than a rich love. In other
words when Gatsby was poor, he was happy and didnt try to impress
anyone, however as he became rich, he tried to impress Daisy so that she
would love him and be with him again.
In conclusion, the color green and the struggle of the American Dream
reflect to a very sad ending. It started as hope for reuniting love and ended
as love for wealth only. Money was the green light for Gatsby to go back to
his old love, Daisy. People were killed and Gatsby was shot which killed his
American Dream as daisy left as well.
