Task 3 (P4, M1, D1)

Energy metabolism

Learning outcomes
Describe 5 different sources of energy and

how they are used

Identify the role of three systems wihtin
energy metabolism
Explain what the body needs energy for
Develop knowledge to achieve assignment
based work o P4 ((M1,D1)

Task 3
As an advisor in a local sports centre design and produce
energy based information booklet for an athlete, covering
an explanation of two of the respiratory, cardiovascular and
digestive systems. This should include and overview of
how energy is used within the body and how the two
named systems are linked to this utilisation. Overall the
booklet should include the information below, starting at P4
and moving to D1
Explain the physiology of two named body systems in relation to
energy metabolism in the body (P4)
Discuss the role, of energy in the body (M1)
Analyse how two body systems interrelate to perform a named
function/functions (D1)

Types of energy
First title in booklet
You need to talk about five different types of

energy
Must include:
Heat, light, electrical, sound and also
chemical energy
You must also mention photosynthesis

Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the chemical change which

happens in the leaves of green plants. It is the first

step towards making food - not just for plants but
ultimately every animal on the planet.
During this reaction, carbon dioxide and water are
converted into glucose and oxygen. The reaction
requires light energy, which is absorbed by a green
substance called chlorophyll.
Photosynthesis takes place in leaf cells. These
contain chloroplasts, which are tiny objects
containing chlorophyll.

Chemical energy
Anything with stored energy that can be

released by a chemical reaction:

Food, batteries, oil, gas, coal and wood
When fuels are burnt they cause energy
transfer.
Petrol burnt inside an engine transfers
chemical energy to kinetic energy and allows
vehicles to move.
The energy from our food is released by
chemical reaction inside us and the energy
transfer allows us to do things.

Energy Laws
Second title in booklet
Energy is the capacity to do work- it must

come from somewhere!!!

First law of energy: thermodynamics (also
called conservation of energy)
Energy can be transformed (changed from
one form to another) but cannot be created or
destroyed (Stretch & Whitehouse 2010)

What does this mean?

First part of this law: Transformation of energy

from one form to another (e.g. When an

engine burns fuel it converts the energy
stored in the fuel's chemical bonds into useful
mechanical work and into heat )
The second form of energy may not be of use
of be capable of being measured

Example
Place a lump of coal on a fire and as the coal

burns the chemical energy within it is

released and transformed into heat, light and
sometimes sound. The chemical energy in
the wood or coal has come from the sun and
the tree has converted this into stored
glucose.
Energy is released when chemical bonds are
broken .e. two atoms become one.

Energy Metabolism
Can you think of ways in which we use

energy in the body?

Can you link this to the body systems?

Examples
Muscular activity: movement, co-ordination
Circulation of all bodily fluids
External and internal respiration
Growth and repair of the body
Nervous system functions: transmit nerve

impulses
Developing complex molecules such as enzymes
and hormones and so much more!

Key terms
Third title: Key terms
Energy Metabolism: all the chemical

processes occurring within an organism

Catabolism: the breaking down of some
chemical reactions and releasing energy
Anabolism: building complex molecules from
simple substances and using energy

Examples
An example of a metabolic reaction is the one

that takes place when a person eats a

spoonful of sugar. Once inside the body,
sugar molecules are broken down into
simpler molecules with the release of energy
Example catabolism: digestion
Example anabolism: muscle growth, DNA

replication
