Determine two instructional strategies that would work for Marta, for Andre, and for Ben in each of the following areas:

Instructional content
Instructional procedures

Ben

Self-Determination: Marta should

learn to set goals and advocate for
herself. This will build a stronger
feeling of self-worth and allow her to
make decisions as an active member
of her education.
Life-Skills: Marta could benefit from
the skills necessary to be successful in
everyday life and post-school. Marta
will need to be able to navigate areas
as well as perform tasks such as
consumer and job skills.

Special Health Care: Andre is in

need of strategies to help manage
his condition. He is in need of skills
to transfer what he knows about his
seizures into all situations.

Transition Planning: Ben can

benefit from team planning for his
future post-school. He is in need
of development of skills and
strategies for when he transitions.

Gen-Ed Curriculum: Andre should

be included into the regular
curriculum to the maximum extent.
With the medication controlling his
condition, he should be able to
participate regularly and there is
nothing said in the study that he is

Behavioral Development: Use of

tools like ABA could help to teach
skills to deal with these new
frustrations. Motivators and
preferred activities could help Ben
to become more equipped to deal
with his injury and its effects.

not academically capable.

Social Skills: Andre could develop
some stigmas due to his condition
and will need to be able to selfadvocate and interact with his peers
and other adults.

Instructional procedures
strategy 1

Communication Skills: Marta should

be continuing to develop verbal and
nonverbal communication. This is vital
for her to be able to generalize and
communicate outside of her familiar
group.

Instructional procedures
strategy 2

Lifting, Carrying and Transferring:

Marta will need to work on skills
necessary for her to become more
independent with her moving from
wheelchair to seat or workstation.

Parent Support: Andres parents

will need to be in communication
with the teacher and vice versa on
his present levels and progress
being made.

Instructional environment
strategy 1

Removal of Barriers: Marta will need

to have easy access to instruction
through modified classroom structure
and ramps.

Instructional environment
strategy 2

Appropriate Training: Teachers and

paraprofessionals will be provided
training and information on how to best
serve Marta and her needs.

Instructional technology
strategy 1

IPad: For use as an augmentative

speech device as well as a portable
resource for necessary schedules and
academic supports.

Physical Structure: Andre will

need to have safety measures
available in the classroom including
a mat and a clear area to go to
when he senses a seizure.
LRE: Andre should be included as
much as appropriate during all
lessons and activities. He should
not be excluded or discriminated
against due to a chance he might
have a seizure.
Match to Strengths: Finding
motivating materials and technology
to maximize Andres involvement in
the classroom.

Instructional technology
strategy 2

Computer: Instruction on possible job

skills that Marta would be capable.
Working to develop occupational goals
incorporated into her curriculum.

Readiness: Technology can

support the program to make it
more motivating and make
information more accessible.
Activities can be sent through the
computer when Andre misses
school due to seizures.

Parental Support: Bens parents

will need: information, in home
support, and help from the teacher
in dealing with this injury. The
teacher should provide support
group info, pre-meetings or small
group meetings to discuss Bens
needs and how to address them.
Direct instruction: Ben will need
to regain the skills lost in the
accident. 1:1 instruction along with
added accommodations and
support will be necessary to
develop those skills.
Physical Structure: Ben can
benefit from visual cues and
schedules to organize and define
expectations.
Home and School Collaboration:
Ben will need to generalize these
new skills in all environments.
Teachers and parents working to
make expectations consistent can
help to define goals.
Rewards: Computer use could be
used to enhance the curriculum as
well as become a tangible reward
for appropriate behavior and goal
achievement.
Independence: Use of technology
could help to alleviate some of
Bens frustrations through a more
independent pace and motivating
activities.

Peers and socialization

strategy 1

Group: Help to develop relationships

with encouragement and
extracurricular activities and
opportunities to work with her typical
peers.

Group: Discussions about Andres

condition and education on
seizures. Open communication
could help to alleviate questions or
concerns his peers might have.

Peers and socialization

strategy 2

Individual: Have open lines of

communication with Marta to help her
build positive adult relationships and a
network of support.

Individual: Extra-curricular
activities appropriate for his
condition to promote independence
and encourage peer interaction.

Group: Making accommodations

necessary to ensure Ben can be
successful while working along
with peers. This will build selfconfidence and positive feelings
toward instruction and group
activities.
Individual: Social skills curriculum
to give Ben the necessary skills to
cope and deal with difficult
situations.
