INTERNET- a global system of networked computers MODEM- a combined device for modulation and demodulation BANDWIDTH/BPS- the range of frequencies within a certain area BROWSER- a program with a Graphical User Interface, used to navigate through the internet SEARCH ENGINE- a program that searches for and identifies items that relate to key words META TAG- tags used in HTML to provide structure metadata about a webpage HTTP-HyperText Transfer Protocol. The standard protocol used to request and transmit items , especially web pages and their components. HYPERTEXT- a software that link topics on the screen to related information and graphics IP ADDRESS/NUMBER- a unique string of numbers that identifies each computer communicating over a network. DOMAIN NAME- the part of a network address that identifies it belonging to something specific URL/URI- Uniform Resource Locator, an address to a resource on the internet WEBSITE- a location connected to the internet that maintains one or more pages on the WWW
NETIQUETTE- the correct/acceptable way of communicating on
the internet FIREWALL- a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access COOKIE- a packet of data sent by an internet server to a browser, which is returned by the browser each time it accesses the same server. CLOUD STORAGE- a model of data storage where digital data is stored and spans multiple servers, the physical environment is typically owned and managed by a hosting company NET NEUTRALITY- the principle that internet service providers should enable access to all content or applications regardless of the source ADWARE- software that automatically displays or downloads advertising material when a user is online VIRUS / MALWARE- a bad piece of software that can attack your computer or parts of it, steal passwords or personal information and feed it back to the original source of the virus DATA-MINING- examining large databases in order to generate new information DENIAL OF SERVICE ATTACK- an attempt to make a server or network resource unavailable to users usually by temporarily interrupting or suspending the services of a host connected tot he internet PHARMING- the practice of directing internet users to a bogus website that mimics the appearance of a legitimate one PHISHING- the activity of defrauding an online account holder of financial information by posing as a legitimate company
SPAM- irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the internet
