Sun and Earth Review Sheet

Rotation- the Earth rotates, or spins, on a line through its center
called an axis.
Axis- imaginary line that goes from the North Pole to the South
Pole.
Sun- as Earth rotates, the sun shines on it (the sun does not
move). The sun is a star that gives Earth light and heat. The sun
is huge. It looks small because it is 93 million miles away from
Earth.
Day and night- because the Earth is always rotating we get night
and day. Remember, the Earth is doing the moving, not the sun.
Orbit- the Earth traveling around the sun. It takes the Earth 365
days to travel once around the sun.
Seasons- during the winter the Earth is tilted away from the sun
so we get less light and heat. During the summer the Earth is
tilted towards the sun giving us more light and heat.
Equator- imaginary line across the middle of Earth. When it is
winter above the equator it is summer below the equator.
When it is summer above the equator it is winter below the
equator.
