Outline

- Hazards
- Safety Controls
- Inspection (unsafe conditions/acts)
Types of Slings:
Chain, wire rope, metal mesh, natural fiber
rope, synthetic fiber rope, synthetic web,
and cargo nets.

Safety awareness: slinging/rigging training (training records).

The proper selection: use the right kind of sling for the job (based upon the size,
type of load, temperature resistance, and the environmental conditions of the
workplace).
Visual inspection before use: check splices rings, thimbles, bow and pin for shackle.
Dont use unsafe slings (e.g. broken, undamaged any chain, corroded, cracked,
broken strand wires, twisted rope, kinked strands and unscrewing pins).
Load capacity (SWL): the slings marked with its safe working loading, using color
coding system for the slings capacity.
Safe slinging arrangements: the example of bad practice: Hooking back to the leg
of a sling.
Secured load: stable load (proper balance: hook is over centre of gravity).
Safe lifting: do not move loads over workers, and only vertical loads allowed, avoid
sharp edges or using soft wood or other suitable packing.
Appreciable PPE for personnel: safety helmets, gloves, hi-vis workwear and safety
footwear.
