Question #1 - Chapter Activities, Service and Leadership Projects !

!Chapter Activities:!
Impact on school and community:!
!School Concerts
!
Host/ Sponsor:!
!
!
!

The TRI-M Music Honor Society at Mainland serves as the host for all of the music department concerts. Those hosting
responsibilities include setting up, tearing down, handing out programs, holding a lobby bake sale and assisting with any
details to assist the directors. This helps to put a TRI-M stamp on all of the school music concerts. In addition, we annually
sponsor a concert event to help motivate and boost the musical environment of our school, community and sending districts.
This past year, we hosted a professional big band concert to kick off the start of our Jazz Band season to help motivate over
50 of our band members who are active in our 2 jazz ensembles. Next year we have the Dallas Brass scheduled for Dec. 15th
to perform school clinics and perform a concert that will involve middle, high school, and community band musicians
performing with them.!

!Nursing Homes:!

Visits to the multiple area nursing homes in our community is by far our biggest community outreach program. From
September through June, our students visit and perform 2-3 visits per month. In Dec., Mar. & June, large events that involve
the full Chapter and additional students are planned.!

!Additional Community Events:!

3 towns Tree Lighting ceremonies !

Several local Hospital lobby performances!
Gildas Club!

!Hearts in Harmony: Elementary school student weekly lesson mentoring!

Several years ago, two freshman students who were motivated by seeing service projects in action started their own ongoing
project that started by collecting donated instruments, having them overhauled, and providing them to students in schools in
disadvantaged areas. They received sponsors, started a non-profit organization Hearts in Harmony, and secured a local
instrument repair man to voluntarily fix the instruments. They have reached out to music educators in towns around the county
to find students to that are in need. If that is not amazing enough, this year other students joined the cause and expanded
Hearts in Harmony to include TRI-M members volunteering to give lessons to elementary school students. This mentoring has
been very active and successful all year long.!

!School Lobby Concerts:!

Small ensembles perform in our school lobby for 20 minutes before school as our students are arriving and entering through
the main entrance. These performances occur mostly in December for the holidays and in March for MIOSM. It helps to set a
nice tone for the day and also to bring music and music performance to the forefront of our school community.!

!CREDIT HOURS & SENIOR SERVICE PROJECTS!

Each student is required to log service credit hours throughout the course of the school year. Service hours are expected to
be music related and can be approved by any adult in charge of an activity in which students are serving. We have set three
minimum benchmarks throughout the course of the year so we can monitor the active participation of each member of our
Chapter. By December, we expect 10 credit hours, by March, 20 hours and by June, a minimum of 30 credit hours for the
year. We also give a monetary scholarship to the student who logs the most approved credit hours during each school year.!
Lastly, all seniors are required to take on a Senior Service Project to be proposed, agreed upon and approved by the
Chapter advisor. These projects have had a profound effect on our school and community in many different ways.!

!Senior Service Projects:!

Here are some examples of Senior Service Projects that students have proposed and accomplished in the past:!
Music Library organization projects!
Elementary horn quartet project!
Choral library database!
Student bassoon mentoring!
Overhaul of Chapter history database!
Middle school lesson volunteering !
Research and contact of graduate members!
Monthly nursing home visits/ performances!
Chapter Brochure and distribution!
Department concert Ad Book
(...and many more)!

At our last meeting in June, each senior presents their senior service project to the Chapter reporting progress, student
outcomes, highlights and feedback. They also report on what they learned, what they gained and what obstacles they
encountered through the process and scope of the project.

(Question #1 - continued)!

!
TRI-M HOST SUMMIT!
! !
!
!
!
!

This activity is the most successful and fun-filled event that Chapter #2692 does each year. Our school hosts multiple other
school TRI-M Chapters for an evening ice cream social and music program that includes either a keynote speaker or
several guest speakers from the music community and a segment for each Chapter President or representatives to share
with the other visiting Chapters what types of activities they sponsor in their school and community. We have brought
together four TRI-M Chapters for this annual event for four years. We are always open to more schools joining our Summit.
Please consider this an invitation to join us. The Mainland TRI-M Summit usually takes place in January.!
The purpose of this Summit is for sharing...!

Question #2 - Describe one memorable Chapter activity:!

!
Harmony Bridge Project!
! !
!
! !

By far, the most memorable and worthwhile and long lasting project that our Chapter has undertaken in over the past
decade has been the Harmony Bridge project.!
This project is designed to connect, share and communicate with all those caring people who "give" of themselves to
musical community service. Those dedicated to "building the bridge" between student musicians and the elderly. Michael
Levine of the Dallas Brass is dedicated to this endeavor and invites everyone to join the nationwide movement of giving!!
The Mainland Regional HS TRI-M Music Honor Society has taken on this project FULL FORCE and is leading the National
Pilot program in our New Jersey communities of Northfield, Linwood & Somers Point for the Dallas Brass.!

The Harmony Bridge Project music was created by arrangers for, and supplied to us by Michael Levine from the Dallas
Brass. His vision is to have music students in all high schools in the country giving of their time and talents to the elderly at
nursing homes and assisted living places in their communities. The music is specifically arranged for flexible
instrumentation for use my small ensembles of all types and combinations. We began with 20 pieces in various styles
ranging from folk music, patriotic, jazz, latin and sing alongs that are all familiar melodies that everyone knows. This is the
KEY! An additional15 charts were added to our Harmony Bridge book this year and even more music will continue as it
becomes available.!

The Mainland TRI-M Chapter #2692 has been involved in rehearsing and performing this music year-round. Our
performance chair schedules several performance visits by small ensembles each month. We also schedule 3 large events
at the Brandywine Assisted Living facility that involves 40-50 students at the Holidays, for Music In Our Schools Month and
also in June as a final end of the year outdoor festival. This has been the 2nd year of the project and it only looks to be
expanded with new music, new chapter inductees taking over leadership of ensembles and chapter officers. The facilities
we visit love our partnership and more importantly, the students enjoy playing for the elderly. They are nervous about the
first time they go, but then they immediately see the impact they are having and cant wait to return again and again.!

We have been involved in making recommendations on the physical music (score & parts), ways of implementing the
program though (but not limited to) the TRI-M Music Honor Society, encouraging other schools involvement, developing
Press Releases and sharing with the other schools that are also piloting the program in 15 other states around the country. !

We rehearse in large groups by distributing bound part booklets through all levels of the high school band program. Student
leaders also work in small groups and chamber ensembles. We have literally made Harmony Bridge (both the learning/
rehearsing of the music and the concept of giving) into the band curriculum and we document musical accomplishment
and involvement in the Student Portfolios.!

!!
Question #3 - Chapter participates in Music In Our Schools Month and with TRI-M Awards:!
!
!
Specific Music In Our Schools Month Activities:!

The focus on music performance: This is a big month for adjudication and recitals!
Concert Bands attend Region Concert Band Adjudicated Festival !
Solo & Ensemble Recital and Induction Ceremony!
Jazz Band attends State Preliminaries!

Weekly nursing home visits by chamber ensembles. !

Bi-Weekly School Lobby performances at 7:30am !
School hallways are decorated with member made posters announcing MIOSM and including music
advocacy quotes. !
Focus on Chamber Music ensembles, preparation for Solo & Ensemble Recital and mentorship of
younger students and new inductees.!
We order Mainland Music Department pencils each year as well as order MIOSM stickers, banners
and other NAfME related items to help celebrate the month.!

- Our Chapter presents all seniors with Graduation Tassels. !

- All student receive Tri-M Lapel Pins and membership cards as they are inducted. !
- New members and Continuing Member receive certificates.!

and March by most
Chapter members. !
Occasionally during
the other months by
various Chamber
Ensembles.

Nursing Home !
Performances:!
There are several
Nursing Homes in our
three sending
communities and we
make it a priority of
our Chapter to visit all
of them frequently.
Visits are scheduled
several times a
month from Sept
through June.

Community
Performances:!
The Chapter makes
it a point to schedule
performances in the
community,
especially for the
holidays and Music
in our schools month.!
This was a
performance at the
local Starbucks.

!
!

Community
Partnerships:!
One of the annual
community
partnerships that we
have made is with
the local hospital.
The Shore Medical
Center generously
makes a donation to
our TRI-M Chapter
and we perform
several times in the
new hospital lobby
during the holiday
season.

Gildas Club:!
Gildas Club is a
local organization
that serves people
and family members
who have been
affected by cancer.
Several times a year,
our TRI-M Chapter
visits to perform for
them. Our Chapter
members really enjoy
these visits.
