CREATING A DOCUMENT BASED QUESTION

CHECK LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS


INDIVIDUALLY, WITH A PARTNER OR WITH A GROUP:
____ 1) Brainstorm several significant issues from the period
____ 2) Select an issue and pose several (5-6) significant questions related to
the issue.
____ 3) Explain why the issue is important to understand
____ 4) Explain why the question is significant in understanding the historical
period
____ 5) Choose one of the questions and develop some possible approaches to
answering the question. (Remember the question cannot be so narrow that all the
documents answer the question)
____ 6) Select 5 - 7 documents that (1) illustrate some aspect of the issue (2)
add insight or outside information to the issue (3) challenge or call into
question traditional or usual interpretations about the issue. Then identify the
source of the document. [Text documents cannot be longer than 200 words]
____ 7) The documents which you select must include, but not limited to, at
least

____ one printed material source
____ one personal document
____ one political document
____ one public record document
____ 8) All Documents must be directly related to the question and usable in
some way to answer the question. The selected documents do not include all the
information needed to answer the question. (The documents are like clues to help
with the answer)
____ 9) Lay out the question in DBQ essay format prepared for duplication
TO BE SUBMITTED WITH THE DBQ LAYOUT
____ A) An explanation of why the issue you selected is important to the
understanding of U.S. History of that period.
____ B) A summary of the main points (historical relevance and inferences) of
each document included.
____ C) A list of relevant outside information you would expect students to use
in answering the question.
____ D) A key of expected responses. Make your own scoring rubric on a scale of
9 to 1. Make sure your key allows students to follow a variety of approaches to
the question.
