English I Literature-Syllabus Outline
Course Goals:
The goals of this course are for you to enhance your spelling, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and
writing skills. You will be introduced to various types of literature: short stories, novels, drama,
biographies, essays, poetry, etc.

Course Breakdown:
Short Stories:
* The Sniper
* Poison
* The Most Dangerous Game
* A Sound of Thunder
* Harrison Bergeron
* Thank You, Ma'am
* The Gift of the Magi
* The Necklace
* The Lady or the Tiger
* The Scarlet Ibis

Poetry:
* Narrow Fellow in the Grass
* I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
* Road Not Taken
* Ballad of Birmingham
* Harlem
Greek Mythology:
* The Odyssey
Novels:
* To Kill a Mockingbird
Plays:
Romeo and Juliet

Additional Assignments:

Literature based composition papers: These papers will connect to literature read throughout
the course. Format may vary with each assignment.

Technology Project: You will utilize various forms of technology to create a multimedia
presentation for one of our literature units this semester.

Grading
Assignments will be graded on a point system. Letter grades will be assigned according to the HHS
handbook. Homework is a major percentage of your grade. Homework grades are based on completion
and/or accuracy. Other assessments will come in the form of journal entries, quizzes, tests, essays and
other projects.

Required Materials:
1. Textbook and supplementary texts, which will be provided throughout the year.
2. Heavy-duty three ring binder (at least 2). Must have paper and dividers for sections.
3. Two-pocket folder
4. Pens, pencils, highlighters
I would highly recommend buying a flash drive for saving typed work from the computer.
Plagiarism Policy:
Plagiarism or cheating is not tolerated! If a student is found to have violated either offense in any form,
he or she will receive an automatic zero and suffer the disciplinary consequences outlined in the student
handbook. Plagiarism may include any of the following:
1. Submitting as one's own an assignment by someone else
2. Copying someone else's words, ideas or answers and representing them as one's own
3. Using material from another source without using notes to document said source
4. Omitting quotation marks from material that is quoted word-for-word from another
source
When to Find Me: Before school Monday-Friday usually by 7:45 am
After school until 3:30
During 4th hour prep period
