Bacardi set a target to reduce packaging weight by 10% before 2017 and 15% by 2022. Since 2008, the companys reduction has exceeded 7%, amounting to 23,000 tons of saved material. Bacardi has cut spending by more than $5 million through this reduction. To continue on this path, Bacardi has committed to using innovative packaging materials and formats, especially those from recycled and renewable sources. The company believes that packaging can be simultaneously premium and sustainable and therefore wants to reconceive the design process altogether, encompassing sustainability at every stage, from design board to delivery formats. Bacardi also seeks to involve suppliers as early as possible in the design stage to identify novel approaches and materials.
