Lesson 3 Assembly
Number the steps necessary to reassemble the M9 Service Pistol from fieldstrip in their order of completion.
1. Insert muzzle of the barrel assembly into the forward open end of the slide. At the same time, lower the
rear of the barrel assembly by aligning the extractor cutout with the extractor. The locking block will
fall into the locked position in the slide.
2. Replace recoil spring and recoil spring guide into slide. Compress assembly by pushing into slide from
rear end. It should rest on barrel.
3. Place slide onto frame, and align track in slide with track in frame. Push slide to rear.
4. Push takedown lever up.
Number the steps necessary to disassemble the M9 Service Pistol in their order of completion.
1. Clear/unload pistol. Allow slide to return fully forward.
2. Hold pistol with muzzle slightly elevated. With forefinger, press disassembly button on right side.
3. With thumb, rotate assembly lever on left side downward.
4. Pull slide and barrel assembly forward and remove from receiver.
5. Slightly compress and lift recoil spring and spring guide from slide. Allow recoil spring to expand
slowly.
6. Separate recoil spring from spring guide.
7. Push in on locking block plunger while pushing barrel forward slightly. Lift and remove barrel
assembly from slide.
Number the steps necessary to reassemble the M9 Service Pistol Magazine in their order of completion.
1. Insert the follower into the top coil of the magazine spring
2. Insert the magazine spring with follower into magazine tube.
3. Turn the magazine bottom up with the back side against the palm of the hand.
4. Attach and center the floorplate retainer to bottom spring coil.

Failing to take the pistol off safe prior to firing.
Failing to make ready.
Engaging the slide stop while firing.
Engaging the magazine release button while firing.
Failing to reset the trigger.
A malfunction causes an interruption in the cycle of operation. False
When not sure why a stoppage has occurred, check for a bore obstruction only after waiting a minimum of 10
seconds to ensure a hangfire did not occur.
Which Weapon Condition Code DOES NOT apply to the M9 Service Pistol?

Condition 4 with the slide locked to the rear.
A round can remain chambered in the M9 Service Pistol after removal of the magazine. True
When is a loaded chamber indicator check made? After a round has been chambered.
Which procedure is associated with the following steps: Make Ready
1. Firmly grip the pistol with the firing hand. Ensure the pistol is pointed in a safe direction, with the slide
in the forward position.
2. To facilitate pulling the slide to the rear, rotate the magazine well outboard. With the fingers and thumb
of the non-firing hand, grasp the serrated sides of the slide just forward of the safety.
3. Pull the slide to its rearmost position by pushing forward with the firing hand while pulling back on the
slide with the non-firing hand.
4. Release the slide. This action will strip a round from the magazine and chamber it as the slide moves
forward.
5. Check to ensure a round has been properly chambered by checking the extractor/loaded chamber
indicator on the right side of the pistol.
Which procedure is associated with the following steps: Load
1. Ensure the pistol is in Condition 4.
2. With the firing hand firmly gripping the pistol and the pistol pointed in a safe direction, rotate the pistol
so the magazine well is inboard and clearly visible. Draw the firing elbow in to facilitate control of the
pistol, keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

3. With the non-firing hand, remove a filled magazine from the ammunition pouch. To ensure the
magazine is filled, slide the index finger along the forward edge of the magazine until the finger is
touching the tip of the round. This step is referred to as indexing the magazine. The extended finger can
also act as a guide in lining the magazine up with the magazine well.
4. Insert the filled magazine into the magazine well, verifying orientation of magazine with index finger.
With fingers extended, push the magazine with the heel of the hand until it is fully seated. Do not
relinquish control of the magazine until it is fully seated.
5. The weapon is now in Condition 3.
Which procedure is associated with the following steps: Unload
1. With the firing hand firmly gripping the pistol, ensure the pistol is on safe by pressing the
decocking/safety lever down.
2. Rotate the pistol so the magazine well is pointed inboard and angled down.
3. Depress the magazine catch to remove the magazine from the pistol. Catch the magazine with the nonfiring hand and stow on person.
4. Push upward on the slide stop with the firing thumb while maintaining pressure. Rotate the pistol so the
chamber is outboard.
5. Reach over the top of the pistol with the non-firing hand and grasp the slide serrations. The non-firing
hand should partially cover the ejection port, positioned to catch an ejected round.
6. With the pistol pointed in a safe direction, fully retract the slide and lock it to the rear. At the same time,
catch the ejected round with the non-firing hand.
7. Rotate the pistol so the inside of the chamber is visible. Visually inspect the magazine well and chamber
to ensure they are empty
Which step is common to both the individual transferring the weapon and the individual receiving the weapon.
Visually inspect the pistol to ensure it is safe and clear.

Which method of transporting the M9 Service Pistol is commonly used when enemy contact is remote? Holster
Which pistol carry method is characterized by extending the arms and raising the pistol to just below eye level?
Ready
What is the first step performed by the person receiving the weapon in a Show Clear transfer? Ensure the pistol
is in condition 4, with the slide locked to the rear.
Select, from the list below, the five M9 Service Pistol Alert Carry steps that apply.
