Executive Summary
This report presents the results of the Local Selling Process
Questionnaire which aims at evaluating the local selling process and
identifying areas that can be improved. The results are supported by
data analysis for the local selling data for 2001.
The questionnaire was filled by 55 respondents from the Sales
department (15), Production Departments (6) and local
customers (34). Each respondent was allowed to fill the questionnaire
by selecting one of five answers for each question. The questionnaire
covered areas/factors such as: Product Quality, Lead Time,
information system, and customer service.
The results showed that people were very excited to present their
ideas and to give proposals for improvement. 94% believes that we
can improve the local selling process significantly. The overall
scores showed that the local selling process is slightly less than
moderate. Most people are very concerned on the lead time. The
respondents suggested several ways to improve the process such as:
to have a clear schedule for the process, to have more production
flexibility, and to improve the production planning process.
The analysis of the local selling orders of 2001, obtained from the
information system, showed that the average total lead time is 70
days with a standard deviation of 43 days. 25% of the items have a
lead time of less than 25 days and 25% of the items have a lead time
of more than 110 days. The data analysis shows some potential
reasons for the long lead time such as: the seasonality pattern of the
local orders, supplier delay, and variability of processing times.
Based on these results, it is recommended to focus on the lead time of
this process. Forming a team from different concerned departments
to propose and implement methods to decrease lead time is also
recommended.

As our business grows, it becomes increasingly necessary to delegate
responsibility and to encourage men and women to exercise their
initiative. This requires considerable tolerance. Those men and women,
to whom we delegate authority and responsibility, if they are good
people, are going to want to do their jobs in their own way.
.
Mistakes will be made. But if a person is essentially right, the mistakes
he or she makes are not as serious in the long run as the mistakes
management will make if it undertakes to tell those in authority exactly
how they must do their jobs.
.
Management that is destructively critical when mistakes are made kills
initiative. And its essential that we have many people with initiative if
we are to continue to grow.
