Axis

HYPOTHYROIDISM
Decrease in Throid hormone or its action leads to

hypothyroidism.
It can beprimary - 95% of cases
central (cause in
Hypothalamus/Pitutary)

Primary hypothroidism can be due to

loss/atrophy of throid gland

compensatory gland hypertrophy
secondary to defective hormone biosynthesis.
Though most of the cases are Idiopathic,
some are Iatrogenicsurgical/radioiodine treatment of
hyperthyroidism
excess of anti-thyroid drugs
various drugs (ex-Lithium)
Others causes include Iodine deficieny, autoimmune disorders

The disorder can occur at any age though the risk

increases with age. It is 10 times more common

with women than men.
Generally onset is insidious (excepti in
chemical/surgical ablation of gland).
In children, it may be associated with irreverisble
physical and mental retardation. In adults, physical
and mental changes are almost always correctable
with hormone replacement therapy.
