(B) analyze specific characteristics of artworks in various cultures

3 min Review
The educator will ask students what they already know about Dia de los Muertos to encourage prior
knowledge about the tradition to aid in their understanding of the art work they will create.
5 min Anticipatory Set
Dia de Los Muertos brief history (3 min)
Dia de los Muertos Masks (2 min)
The videos will provide a brief history of the cultural tradition as well as a visual representation of
the expected outcome of the project.

2 min Instructional Objectives


The student will be able to (A) correctly(D) create (B) a mask representing Dia de los Muertos
tradition (C) Cognitive Creating / Psychomotor Creating
The student will (A) demonstrate (B) an appropriate understanding (D) of the various styles of

9 min Input and Modeling
Activity 1
The educator will provide an example of a Dia de los Muertos mask as well as the expected finished
product.
Activity 2
The educator will model the initial steps of creating the mask. Creating the masks requires a plastic
mask to act as a form on which to create the mask. Although this is not the only method this is the
method we will use. Strips of plaster cloth will be cut in to smaller strips, then soaks in water, and
applied immediately to the plastic mask form.

Checking Understanding
The educator will check for understanding as the students work on their project. If needed the
educator will help students individually.
30 min Guided Practice
The students will have the remaining class period to work on their individual project.

Independent Practice
The assignment will take place during the class period.

1 min Lesson Closure


The educator will discuss what the students will do next class period. The masks will dry overnight
and the next day students can begin their sketches prior to painting their masks.
Materials: Computer, handouts, plaster cloth, bowls, water, newspaper, scissors, paint, plastic
masks

Accommodations
Students who require accommodations will be given more time to complete the project and further
assistance if needed.
Reflection
The educator will reflect on what should be done differently.
