Unit 4 Linear Regression (Chps. 7-8)

Big Idea:

Scatterplots are useful for determining how strong of an association exists between two quantitative variables.
To describe the association, one should discuss the direction, form, and strength of the pattern. Also, any
unusual features should be noted. The correlation coefficient is a statistic that is used to describe the strength of
a linear pattern. The goal of linear regression is to fit the best line possible to the data. The best line is the one
that makes the total squared error as small as possible. The regression line can be used to make predictions and
its slope tells us the average rate of change of a linear pattern. The goodness of fit is described by the statistic
R2. Finally, the line of best fit can be calculated from formulas or with technology.

Skills:

Create and describe scatterplots. Interpret the meaning or r Lessons 1
