Fight for the Children
Kou Manao Speech Outline
I. Introduction
A. Attention-Getter quote My attention getter will be a quote by Nelson Mandela,There
can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children.
B. Transition - Link to Thesis What Nelson is saying that we can judge how our society is
by looking at how our children are treated.
C. Thesis Statement Looking at the children, we see that they actually have very little rights,
and are treated in today as well as yesterdays world.
D. Preview of Points- The points I am going to discuss today is what is child labor, our stand
against child labor, and
E. Transition: Signpost Now on to talk more in depth of my points.
II. Body
A. Main Point 1 First of all, what is child labor?
a. Subpoint 1- I found this definition of what child labor is in the
encyclopedia
1. Form of support- According to encyclopedias definition of child labor, it is work done by
persons under age eighteen (or younger, depending on applicable national law) that is harmful
to them for being abusive, exploitive, hazardous, or otherwise contrary to their best interests. It
is a subset of a larger class of childrens work, some of which may be compatible with childrens
best interests... (Myers, Child Labor)
b. Subpoint 2- Example on dangerous and hazardous jobs
1. Form of support - For example, dangerous jobs would be moving bricks or stones to build;
and a hazardous job would be working in a factory. When combined with a very young age, the
danger and hazards of these job increase.
c. Transition: Review-Preview- My last point was talking about
basically what child labor is defined as.
B. Main Point 2 My next point is that child labor is slavery, but the reason its easy to keep
it around today is because children cant fight back.
a. Subpoint 1- Children cant fight back
1. Form of support- Three out of every 1,000 persons worldwide are in forced labor, and 26%
of these are children. It is easy to take hold of the children and hide them away. Getting to know
the topic more, children cant fight back. Because of this, its easier to scare them and take hold
of them, keep them secret, and work them. (Child Trafficking, Global March Against Child
Labor)
b. Subpoint 2- Young girls are being taken advantage of and molested
or raped

1. Form of support - On a different note, some young girls are being put to work like the boys,
but others are raped again and again. These girls are sometimes as young as five years old,
maybe even younger.
c. Transition: Internal Summary- In my last point, I discussed more
on child labor, and the fact that children are treated as slaves: taken
from their homes and families, and forced to work. This includes the
young girls being molested and raped. In the point I will now make, I
want us to take a stand against child labor, and fight for the rights of
children.
C. Main Point 3 Now, we all must come together to fight for these children who cannot fight
for themselves.
a. Subpoint 1- Child Labor was seen as a good thing, but back in the
1800s, only put an end to (in America) in around 1960
1. Form of support- During the 1800s, the nations urbanization and industrialization had
grown and put an emphasis on childrens value as laborers, but in the 1960s, there was the civil
rights movement put in place in America. Other countries still fail to see that there is a legal
recognition of childrens rights apart from their parents. Meaning children have their own rights
and are not to be treated as dogs.
b. Subpoint 2- United Nations finally decided to put a bill to stop
children labor.
1. Form of support -The United Nations has finally drafted a bill called the Child Labor
Prohibition and Regulation Amendment that bans employment of children below 14 years in all
occupations, and prohibits employment of adolescents in dangerous occupations. However,
this bill has been pending since December 2012
c. Transition: Sign post-(write out as a complete sentence.)
III. Conclusion
A. Restate Thesis -Looking at the children, we see that they actually have very little rights,
and are treated in today as well as yesterdays world.
B. Review of Points The points I discussed with you today is what is child labor, the fact that
child labor is basically slavery, and our stand against child labor, and fight for childrens rights.
C. Closing Statement though- Imagine being taken away from your loved ones to work for a
stranger, without pay; not being able to enjoy your youth; and having your innocence stripped
away from you.
